o Ensuring the effective management of a ward with day-to-day responsibility of managing the shift, and bed management.

o Delivery of a high standard of patient care on a daily basis and providing clinical and managerial leadership and teaching to nursing and support staff.

o Assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for patients who suffer from severe mental illness.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and provide Leadership and be a role model to the team. They will provide quality evidence-based nursing advice, support and care for patients with mental health needs and their carers within a multidisciplinary setting.

They will carry overall continuing responsibility for the management and leadership of the ward including administration and the overall co-ordination, assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting and auditing of standards of care

The post holder will be required to work within the NMC Code of Practice and professional guidelines.

Provide clinical and managerial leadership on the ward.

Responsibility for the effective functioning of the clinical environment.

Overall responsibility for setting, monitoring and maintaining clinical and educational standards.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Using Health Roster to ensure appropriate staff resources are planned/ deployed to meet safe staffing requirements.

Undertake assessments of individuals with complex mental health presentations, and high levels of risk.

Create co-produced/ collaborative care and recovery plans.

Offer specialist nursing assessment and advice.

Take the lead in delivering therapeutic group work programmes.

Administer medication, complying with relevant Trust procedures and NMC Guidance.

Ensure the safe custody of all patients alongside the clinical team. Including the supervision of patients within hospital, grounds and the community.

Undertake audits of clinical activity and standards and develop action plans to address any improvements required.

Participate in the on-site site Manager rota providing out of hours senior managerial, clinical advice, guidance and support on site. To be the first point of contact for fire, medical and psychiatric emergencies and coordinate Section 136 assessments as required.

Maintain an up-to-date level of professional competence within the specific environment.

Attend meetings, multi-disciplinary ward rounds and case conferences as necessary and present information relating to patients or the service as necessary.

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with NMC
  • Post-registration experience and/or evidence of formal courses and training at post graduate diploma level
  • Practice Assessor


Desirable

  • Clinical Supervision Training
  • Recognised Psychological Interventions Training, e.g. CBT, EMDR, CAT


EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Significant demonstrable post qualification experience at Band 6 working in either a secure / mental health / specialist inpatient setting.
  • Demonstrate a high level of clinical experience working with Mentally Disordered Offenders Experience of developing, delivering and evaluating specialist programmes of care and risk management plans.


Desirable

  • Experience of working in a community setting.
  • Experience of managing a team of staff.


SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

Essential

  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to demonstrate diplomacy, tact and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to manage highly stressful and emotive situations.
  • Current knowledge of the policy and challenges facing NHS providers.


Desirable

  • Presentation skills.
  • Project Management skills.
  • Skills in leading quality improvement initiatives.
