The Team in Swansea is looking for an enthusiastic Consultant Psychiatrist to fill this permanent post based at Cefn Coed Hospital working in male high dependency rehabilitation/recovery inpatient units for treatment of patients with serious mental illnesses.

This post will cover Gwelfor an eighteen bed male high dependency rehabilitation/recovery unit for treatment of patients with serious mental illnesses and the Step-Down Houses a community rehabilitation unit which is comprised of two houses (Ty Gwanwyn and Carreg Sarn) a variation of staffed and floating support.

This is a replacement post joining a Speciality Doctor with the support of a Multidisciplinary Team inclusive of Occupational Therapy and Psychology. There are also opportunities for a CT3 psychiatry trainee to work alongside the clinical team. There is a General Practitioner who covers Gwelfor and Stepdown for one day week to see to the patients medical care.

The medical team working on Gwelfor/step down work in partnership with a wider rehabilitation team including low secure services based at Taith Newydd (Glanrhyd Hospital, Bridgend) and a community Adult Forensic Community Team.

Accepting this role will see you joining a very experienced Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) working at the heart of practice within the unit working to enable the provision of effective, comprehensive care. The MDT work with the patients to ensure that individuals experience a seamless and co-ordinated approach to their care.

Main duties of the job

You will provide a clinical service, with colleagues, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.

Working with consultant colleagues and the multi-professional team you will have continuing responsibility for the well-being of all patients under your care allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff. In partnership with clinical and managerial colleagues you will also have responsibility for the safe, efficient and effective functioning of the services in which you work.

You may be named in the contracts of junior staff as the person expected to act as Educational Supervisor for core and higher psychiatric trainees assigned to you over seeing their training and being the initial source of advice for doctors regarding their careers, within the guidelines of the specialist bodies and Royal Colleges.

You will be expected to make a significant contribution to the service and directorate planning process through active participation in the clinical directorate structure.

You will participate in the 1 in 20 on call consultant rota across the Swansea Bay UHB area, with prospective cover. In exceptional circumstances it may also be necessary to undertake duties at other locations with the Health Board. Travelling as necessary between sites.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered with the GMC
  • Licensed to practice
  • On Specialist Register with GMC as a specialist in psychiatry or eligible for CCT within 6 months of date of interview and have passed exit exam or a statement of eligibility for registration issued by PMETB or a primary medical qualification and recognized specialist qualification from a European Member State which will allow direct entry to the GMC Specialist Register


Desirable

  • Primary CCT or an endorsement, in CAMHS or General Adult Psychiatry
  • Further relevant degree/diploma
  • Teaching qualification/Higher qualification in medical education


Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of an ability to develop effective working relationships, on an individual and multi-disciplinary basis with all levels of staff (Working Together)
  • Evidence of working with management and clinical colleagues to improve a service (Always Improving)
