We have an opportunity for a Specialist doctor in a role which is split between the Older Adult Community Mental Health Team in Lincoln and the Mental Health Liaison Service based at the Lincoln County Hospital, Lincoln.

You will be working alongside colleagues covering the Lincoln Older Adult Community Mental Health Team to provide general psychiatric care for older adults in the West of Lincolnshire. You will also work within the multi-disciplinary liaison psychiatry team at the Lincoln County Hospital site and provide Working Age and Older Adult Psychiatry input to the team working alongside existing Liaison colleagues. In this role you will provide specialist psychiatric assessment and support appropriate treatment to patients presenting with both mental and physical health symptoms regardless of age and presumed cause..

With the increasing use of technology in the organisation, a significant amount of work can now be carried out remotely via secure online platforms. This includes case reviews and consultations, MDT reviews, Best Interest Meetings and liaison with acute care colleagues. There is also access to a wide range of relevant clinical information from primary and secondary care teams within an online care portal. As a Specialist within the Team, you will therefore be encouraged to work in a consultative way using technology to support your day-to-day practice.

Main duties of the job

· Lead in the management of complex cases

· Provide assessments of new patients and formulate treatment plans

· Support the triage functions of the team with medical expertise

· Use evidence-based treatment using local/national guidelines

· Work collaboratively in liaison with teams in the Trust, other NHS organisations and third sector providers

· Use the Mental Health Act, as appropriate

· Work in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary, multi-agency and partnership way

· Provide medical treatment within a model of multi-disciplinary care

· Attending weekly clinical team meetings and performing medical duties that are decisions of that meeting

· Compiling a patient’s history from several sources, and preparing case summaries and discharge summaries

· Preparing reports for Mental Health Review Tribunals and Managers’ Hearings and giving evidence

· Liaising with general practitioners and medical Specialists on the physical health of the patients

· Assessment of patients out of area on rare occasions

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Full GMC registration.
  • Section 12(2) approval.
  • DBS clearance.
Desirable
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • MRCPsych or MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  • Approved Clinician Status.
Skills and Abilities Essential
  • Ability to take a leadership role in a multi-disciplinary team, ensuring high quality care and staff morale.
  • Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work.
  • Ability to appraise own performance.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Experience Essential
  • Widespread and detailed experience of assessment and management of patients in old age psychiatry.
  • A minimum of six years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Prior experience of liaison psychiatry with older adults.
  • Prior experience of liaison psychiatry with older adults.
Desirable
  • 3 years supervised training in an appropriate ST4-6 equivalent training programme.
Teaching Essential
  • Participate in CPD Programme.
  • Teach trainees from medical and allied health professionals in clinical settings.
Desirable
  • Teaching experience.
