Applications are invited for the post of Deputy Matron on West Wing Clinical Research Centre and the Drug Development Unit at the Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. West Wing Clinical Research Centre incorporates the NIHR Royal Marsden Clinical Research Facility, providing dedicated daycare facilities for patients on early phase clinical trials. The Drug Development Unit, a designated Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre, is widely regarded as the worldwide leader in phase I clinical trials, and incorporates dedicated in-patient and daycare facilities on Oak Ward.

This post is an excellent opportunity to be centrally involved in the delivery of care to patients involved in clinical trials of experimental anti-cancer drugs and other clinical research performed in patients with advanced cancer. The post holder will be responsible for all aspects of daily operational management for WWCRC and DDU, delivering key performance targets and quality measures. The Deputy Matron will provide clinical leadership to the nursing and administrative teams, maintaining credibility through practice and provide a high quality and safe patient service, which exceeds patient expectations. They will liaise effectively with members of the research community, within the Trust and the ICR, to achieve a coordinated specialist service and best research practice.

Extensive post registration experience, including experience in a senior leadership role is essential, as is substantial current post registration clinical experience in oncology nursing. Demonstrable experience in research is required.

  • Provide and sustain a high-quality specialist nursing service to patients and their families within own area of expertise.
  • Develop tools to improve the quality of the service and co-ordinate clinical services across the department.
  • To monitor clinical standards, evaluate patient care, ensuring practice is evidence based and that clinical guidelines and care pathways are developed and implemented.
  • To identify and deal effectively with poor practice or declining standards of care and have oversight of the resource management on the wards, ensuring the responsible use of resources, while promoting safety and care
  • To increase nursing influence in decision making and enhance the contribution of nursing to the clinical management of patients within the service.


Person Specification

Education

Essential

  • RGN
  • Relevant Post-Registration specialist course
  • SLICE or equivalent teaching experience
  • Master's degree in nursing related subject or equivalent experience


Desirable

  • o Recognised leadership qualification


Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Extensive post registration experience, including at least 2 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Substantial current post registration clinical experience in oncology nursing.
  • Experience in research minimal two years.
  • Experience and evidence of developing practice.
  • Experience of effective operational, staff and budget management.
  • Experience of supporting learning in the clinical environment
  • Experience of participating in clinical governance initiatives.
  • Experience and evidence of working collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Understanding of frameworks that support Clinical research.
  • Good insight into current health policy development
