My job makes better lives by leading and managing care of Children and Young People (CYP) who present in the Emergency Department (ED) at the District General Hospital (DGH) and by working in partnership with the multi-disciplinary team consisting of representatives from the ED, police, ambulance, and mental health service alongside CYP and their families/carers collaboratively making a difference to their lives.

Job Overview As part of apartnershipwithin the Paediatric ED at the DGH it is vital to ensure the service operates in a safe, effective and efficient way as part of a whole system. Foster a culture that encourages and enables individuals to have an active role in identifying, planning and meeting their individual needs. Support strategic leadership in relation to service improvement and quality evaluation

The Paediatric Liaison Service is vital to ensuring the needs of CYP presenting at ED with mental health and emotional issues are, in a timely manner, assessed and an appropriate response to their needs is put in placeas part of the partnership between you and the ED Paediatric colleagues.

Please note: There are vacancies in three District General hospitals namely, Epsom General hospital (1), Royal Surrey County Hospital (2) and St Peters hospital (2).

Main duties of the job

  • To provide visible, credible professional clinical leadership, supporting the clinical management of CYP with mental health issues who have presented to the Emergency Department, who may have CYP with challenging behaviour as a result of an underlying condition such as learning difficulties, Asperger's and ADHD.
  • To improve patient experience, quality and efficiency of service in DGH by focusing on the significant number of CYP with mental health issues that can complicate their care and discharge.
  • Ensuring the care delivered to CYP with mental and physical health needs is of a high quality, research based, and is CYP and family/carer focused.
  • To support the wider paediatric nursing and medical team, by arranging training opportunities to up-skill all professionals on effectively managing CYP's mental health needs.
  • To manage CYP presenting with mental health. Emotional health and social care needs, co-ordinating between the medical, nursing CYPS community teams.

  • A clinical qualification to degree level or equivalent Membership of NMC professional body


Experience

Essential

  • Band 6 - 2 years' post qualifying experience working with CYP with mental health needs within a crisis service. Ability to undertake mental health assessments, risk assessments, risk formulations, crisis and contingency planning and use of outcome measures. Band 7 - 3 years post qualification experience 2 years experience working with CYP with mental health needs, 1 of which is at a band 6 in CYPS services
