We have an exciting opportunity for a full time (10 PAs) Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists to join our Inpatient Unit, alongside another full time Consultant.

Lavender Walk Adolescent Unit is a recently developed 12 bedded general adolescent inpatient unit located in a HSJ award nominated building. The Unit has been operational since the 1stNovember 2018.

The clinical model is centred on the delivery of a robust approach to assessment, formulation and the planning of treatment approaches which provide appropriate care adjusted to the complex mental health needs of young people. The service provides a high quality, safe environment which can manage and support both high levels of clinical risk and high levels of vulnerability. There is strong emphasis on evidence based treatment delivered by the Unit's skilled multi-disciplinary team with a core team of expert psychiatry, psychology, family therapy, occupational therapy, nursing staff and education staff. Education is provided by the well-establishedChelsea Community Hospital School.

Main duties of the job

The two Consultants will share responsibility for clinical leadership and patient care on the inpatient unit. One post will lead for relationship management and liaison with the NWL CAMHS Provider Collaborative (PC), attending PC clinical steering groups, the weekly PC bed management meeting and escalation meetings.

The second consultant will lead a clinical group alongside the PC, to work on the feasibility and development of a day unit program on Lavender Walk, and/or other stepped approach to minimise in-patient admissions. The role of the consultant psychiatrist will be to provide dedicated, high quality medical care and treatment for young people and their families presenting with a range of mental health issues and developmental trauma. The successful applicants will be part of a senior clinical leadership team which consists of the Clinical Nurse Manager and a Consultant Clinical Psychologist & Therapy Lead.

Job description Job responsibilities

  • Provide psychiatric assessment, including risk assessment for young people referred to, and those admitted to the service.
  • Provide leadership and vision for services reducing in-pt admission length of stay
  • Clear formulation of psychiatric and social need.
  • Provide treatment for young people admitted to the service.
  • Working in partnership with young people, parents and carers to develop evidence-based, effective and agreed care plans.
  • Coordinating multiagency packages of care, treatment and support for young people and their families with complex mental health problems.
  • Providing consultation, advice and appropriate support to professionals in the wider network of the young person and/or family.
  • Co-ordinate clinical liaison with clinicians in other community CAMHS services and other agencies.
  • Contributing to the CNWL Out of Hours consultant psychiatric on-call rota.
  • Auditing of psychiatric practice and multidisciplinary work.
  • Ensure effective communication with referring and receiving teams throughout the Trust, (including the local urgent/crisis CAMHS team); and regionally/ nationwide.
  • Recording of clinical activity and prompt submission of returns in line with service requirements.
  • Maintaining accurate, contemporaneous medical notes in line with the Trusts record keeping policy.
  • Providing cross cover for CNWL Tier 4 inpatient consultants.


Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Listed on the Specialist Register of the GMC Medical Register or eligible to register within six months
  • To be approved under Section12 (2) of the Mental Health Act, 1983 the 2007 amendment and successor legislation
  • Approved Clinician status in terms of the same legislation
  • Experience of assessing and treating complex patients in acute and community psychiatric settings
  • Membership of a professional indemnity organization.
  • Engagement with annual appraisal.
  • Experience of Safeguarding Children Framework
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary teaching
  • Ability to take a leadership role in a multi-disciplinary team, ensuring high quality care and staff morale
  • Capacity to respond positively to the changing nature of an acute inpatient setting
  • Excellent communication skills in verbal and written media
Desirable
  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualifications/ certification
  • Experience, at consultant or ST6 level of child and adolescent psychiatry
  • Psychotherapy skills/training (e.g. Family therapy, CBT)
  • Publications in the field of Psychiatry
  • Management Skills and training
  • Experience in Microsoft Word
  • PowerPoint and Excel
  • Have experience working with different cultural backgrounds
