We are recruiting for a Specialist Computer Engineer who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

The Radiotherapy Physics Computing Group of the Digital Department is part of a multi-disciplinary team in a large Cancer Centre. The Section consists of radiographers, scientists and engineers. Close links are maintained with the other sections within the Physics Department (Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Protection), and with the Bioengineering section, which has responsibility for the in-house maintenance of linacs. Also on site is the Paul Strickland Scanner Centre which provides CT, MR and CT-PET imaging for radiotherapy patients. Treatment planning is performed on Pinnacle and Eclipse planning systems. The Department provides and supports its own LAN (Medical Equipment LAN or MEL) to provide an integrated Aria Radiotherapy Network to transfer treatment parameters and images between the various pieces of equipment in a secure fashion, as well as to streamline the patient flow.

You will be a part of a team providing IT services and you will assist in development and delivery of training and support to all users of system and applications implemented within the department.

In addition you will receive 15% of basic salary,subject to a minimum payment of £4,314 and a maximum payment of £5,436 .

Main duties of the job

Investigate technical/functional issues raised by users and ensure that they are resolved to satisfaction of all parties and do not comprise operation and security of systems or applications.

Plan and manage implementation of hardware and software solutions as required with internal and external parties to minimize disruption to treatment delivery.

Assist in the testing of the MEL following repair or upgrade to ensure safety of patient treatment, including sign off for clinical use

Develop solutions to IT problems using a range of tools and techniques to deliver best-fit solutions.

Design and specify equipment to meet service needs including appropriate sourcing of quotations.

Provide advice and training for physics, radiography and medical staff on the Aria Patient Management System both either directly in response to a support call or indirectly via provision of training.

Act as an operator under the definitions of IR(ME)R, in accordance with Trust Policies and Practices.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree or equivalent experience
  • Post graduate qualifications eg MCP or MCSE or equivalent from Sun, Cisco or similar or equivalent experience


Previous Experience

Essential

  • NHS or healthcare experience as an engineer or similar
  • Support of LAN, Windows 10, Server 2019, Server 2016, Active Directory


Desirable

  • Support of a Citrix environment
  • Support of Linux/Solaris environments over Ethernet
  • Experience in a radiotherapy or radiotherapy physics environment
  • Experience with the ARIA R+V system


Skills

Essential

  • Ability to communicate across professions
  • Self-organised - able to work in a very busy environment
  • Diligence and attention to detail commensurate with clinical nature of systems to be supported
  • Able to work independently with occasional clarification about projects from managers
  • Able to make decisions about safety of computer and network system without recourse to manager
  • Able to work easily in a Radiotherapy clinical environment
  • Able to deal with occasional distressing circumstances (work occasionally involves contact with cancer patients)
  • Able to concentrate frequently when subject to unpredictable working patterns (eg when carrying duty phone)
  • Able to lift light to moderate weights eg printers and computers
  • Able to deliver teaching and training to other professional staff on detailed technical subjects
  • Good negotiation skills able to deal with highly intricate and unpredictable situations
  • There may be occasional exposure to distressing circumstances and also exposure to bodily fluids
  • The post holder must be prepared and able to occasionally exert moderate effort for short periods, to move and set up servers
  • The post holder must be prepared to work in an environment where there is a radiation hazard, training will be provided if required
  • The post holder must be prepared to work flexible shifts and occasional weekend work may be required


Knowledge

Essential

  • To administrative or in-depth level:- At least three of ? Windows 10 ? Windows Server 2016/2019 ? Citrix/Netscaler ? Solaris ? Linux ? Active directory ? SQL
  • Ability to trouble shoot on day to day problems in all above systems
  • Varian Aria (knowledge of another Record & Verify system would be an alternative)
