The Renal Psychology Service at St George's Hospital was established in April 2010 and has become an integral part of the unit supporting patients and the clinical teams across the entire service. (i.e. Inpatient, Outpatient Haemodialysis/Peritoneal Dialysis, Transplantation, Low Clearance Clinic). Clinical work with individual patients and their families/carers includes:

  • Helping patients adjust to their diagnosis or illness and changes in its severity.
  • Design and implement interventions with patients having psychological difficulties due to/or exacerbated by their illness and its treatment
  • Assisting patients with making complex treatment choices such as which form of renal replacement therapy to choose.
  • Understanding and resolving treatment adherence issues particularly in low clearance patients.

Main duties of the job

With support from the senior psychologist in the directorate, to be responsible for providing high quality, specialist clinical / counselling psychology input to the Renal Service. This will include providing specialist psychological assessment and therapy, offering advice and consultation on psychological aspects of renal care to other health professionals and non professional carers. Where appropriate, the post holder will exercise autonomous professional responsibility for clinical decisions, working within professional guidelines and the service's policies and procedures. The post holder will be expected to utilise their knowledge of evidence based psychological interventions and research skills to identify and implement audit, research and service development projects. The postholder will also be involved in the training and continuing professional development of clinical psychologists and other health professionals.

Person Specification
Experience
Essential

  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
  • Experience of psychological work with people with physical health problems.
  • Experience of working in NHS services.
  • Experience in acute hospital inpatient settings

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.
  • Experience of the application of clinical health psychology in different cultural contexts.
  • Experience in acute hospital inpatient settings

Qualifications
Essential

  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or equivalent), including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS.
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.
  • Membership of the British Psychological Society / Division of Clinical Psychology / Faculty of Clinical Health Psychology

Skills
Essential

  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Knowledge of clinical health psychology models / psychological aspects of illness.
  • Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.

Desirable

  • High level knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological approaches for specific problems (e.g. personality disorder, traumatic and adjustment reactions, adherence difficulties etc ).
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health.
