The post holder will be the designated Clinical/Counselling/Forensic Psychologist (0.6 F/T) for the Mental Health Treatment Requirements (MHTR) Team within NHFT. The post will involve being the Clinical/Counselling/Forensic Psychologist for the MHTR within the county, one of 5 national pilot sites, for 12 Months - Fixed-Term - Maternity Leave.

The MHTRs sit alongside Drug Rehabilitation Requirement (DRR) and Alcohol Treatment Requirement (ATR) under the umbrella of 'Community Sentence Treatment Requirements' (CSTR) andprovide a mechanism to ensure that certain offenders with mental health problems who are given a Community Order are able to access appropriate treatment.

Main duties of the job

On a day-to-day basis, provide specialist psychological assessments of clients referred to the team based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources, therapy, risk assessments, self-report measures, rating scales, multidisciplinary meetings with probation staff and service users, liaise with other professionals involved with the client.

You will also be expected to support the senior management team in the clinical leadership of healthcare around anything that pertains to mental health, supervision, clinical responsibilities, audit, policy or service development and research.

There will be a specific focus on complex presentations and trauma. Lastly, the post holder is expected to liaise with other stakeholders within the court, criminal justice agencies, and individual cases through regular meetings.

Job responsibilities

We are looking for a psychologist who possesses good, qualified specialist knowledge of complex mental health problems and is aware of the risks to self and others. The post holder will work autonomously within professional guidelines (HCPC, BPS) and the overall framework of the Trust's policies and procedures.

The post holder will offer psychological assessment and therapy and hold a client caseload within the MHTR. The caseload will be of individuals who present with mental health complexities. The successful candidate will provide supervision for Assistant Psychologists andbe able to demonstrate a keen interest in working with people with complex mental health needs and forensic histories as part of a multidisciplinary team, consulting on and promoting psychologically informed approaches to understanding and working positively with this population.

Training & Qualification

Essential

  • Post-graduate in clinical, counselling, or forensic psychology (or its equivalent) as accredited by the BPS.
  • Registered with the HCPC


Desirable

  • Specialist training in personality disorder


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in forensic services, inpatient and/or secure services, or with challenging behaviour
  • Experience in the application of applied psychology in different cultural contexts and experiences of working within a multicultural framework.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialist psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g. personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities etc).


Desirable

  • Experience of working with Personality Disorder, Trauma and Complex Presentations


Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • Ability to comprehend and communicate verbally and in writing highly complex and sensitive information in a manner appropriate to a range of settings and audiences, including complex, highly emotive situations and those with significantly impaired communication capacities.
  • Ability to analyse and manage complex multifactorial clinical information from a range of sources integrating it into a formulation utilising a variety of psychological perspectives.


Desirable

  • Capacity to manage frequent exposure to highly distressing and emotive situations and disclosures.
  • Capacity to tolerate frequent exposure to unpredictable working conditions including demanding, verbally aggressive clients and deal with physical aggression appropriately.
