Here within the Cancer Nursing Team at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust we are looking to recruit a dynamic cancer nurse to the post of Head and neck Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist.

The vacancy is for 37.5 hours per week, to be worked over 5 days, fixed term for 1 year. A secondment will be considered.

This post is based in York Hospital, but regular travel to Scarborough, Harrogate and Castle Hill hospitals or other Trust bases will be required. Travel time will be incorporated into your working time and costs will be reimbursed.

The role requires a Registered Nurse who can work autonomously within their scope of practice and of the job description, and support the team to deliver safe effective care to our patients. Furthermore, the appointee must be equipped with excellent communication skills and the ability to work within a diverse multi-disciplinary group of clinicians, patients, and allied healthcare providers.

You must be self-motivated, enthusiastic, organised, computer literate and able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills with a commitment to continued personal and professional development.

Main duties of the job

Provide a professional, proactive, and sensitive service to cancer patients and their relatives.

Will act as a main point of contact for patients, carers, and wider healthcare team to provide( in conjunction with the Cancer Care Coordinator), high quality patient care through proactive identification of needs which require a level of clinical knowledge utilising approved tools and procedures.

Collaborate and communicate with the wider healthcare team acting as a resource to ensure the provision of appropriate services to maximise the health and quality of life of the patient, improving the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery.

Be responsible for the coordination of the administrative function within the complex cancer pathways arranging investigations, appointments, and Multi-Disciplinary Team discussion in a timely manner to ensure waiting time targets are not breached and patient's needs are met.

Will be expected to manage and prioritise the running of the service in the absence of the Band 7 team leader, and work flexibly to the needs of the service, which can often be demanding and unexpected.

The principal role of the post holder is to work within a high-quality specialist service to meet the needs of the patient with a cancer.

The post holder along with the rest of the CNS team will work to deliver evidence-based practice and quality improvement initiatives.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Experience at Band 5 or equivalent within a specialty
  • Experience of undertaking audit and standard setting
  • Understanding of the local and national nursing agenda
  • Understanding of national guidance on cancer pathways
  • Knowledge of microsoft office, word, excel and outlook


Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (level 1)
  • Diploma level education or equivalent
  • Recognised teaching and assessing qualification or equivalent experience


Desirable

  • Working towards a degree or equivalent
  • Post registration qualification in speciality
