An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Radiology Department for a Band 7 Plain Film Superintendent Radiographer.

The post holder will manage the day to day organisation and operational issues of radiographic services in the Plain Film Radiology Department, which will include Fluoroscopy and the daily operational oversight of the ED CT scanner. They will conduct diagnostic radiography examinations across a range of clinical specialities and more specialised modalities, upon a range of patient types both as an autonomous practitioner and as part of a multi professional team, in a manner that meets professional, departmental and legal standards and requirements. The post holder will independently assess each patient and adapt radiographic techniques according to their needs. They will undertake an active role in the training of Radiography Students, Medical Students or any other Trainees from other Trusts or Universities. The post holder will use professional discretion and experience to ensure that clinical practice is carried out correctly, professionally and within the legal framework.

Main duties of the job

1. To conduct examinations across a range of clinical specialities, including fluoroscopy and across a range of patient types both as an autonomous practitioner and as part of a multi professional team, in a manner that meets professional, departmental and legal standards and requirements.

2. To interpret clinician's requirements, to determine the appropriate radiographic technique and ensure that it is performed in accordance with best practice and that the resultant images are of a high standard and patient care is maintained at all times. Information to be interpreted maybe complex in nature.

3. To assess and justify referrals under Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposure)Regulations 2017, IR(ME)R following practitioner guidelines .

4. To use discretion to work outside of departmental standards when clinical circumstances necessitate i.e. undertaking additional or specialist techniques.

5. To independently assess each patient and adapt radiographic technique according to the needs of the patient.

6. To be competent in the use of all the X-ray equipment including computer radiography and digital radiography systems and to report and discuss all equipment faults with the relevant engineer.

7. To check processed images against accepted diagnostic standards, including patient details and to act appropriately according to findings.

Job responsibilities

1. To discuss verbal interpretation of images with other practitioners and clinicians.

To undertake formal training in radiographer role extension as required and in accordance with departmental policies

2. To ensure a quality assurance programme is carried out as required and set up by the Medical Physics department.

3. Take responsibility for lists and liaise with the Admin Manager in coordinating the day today bookings within the Plain Film and Fluoroscopy Department.

4. To be able to use the departmental radiology information computer system (CRIS) as required and be conversant with the picture archive communication system (PACS)

5. To relate to all manner of patients with understanding and care, respecting their privacy and dignity to provide a caring and confidential service

6. To manage own workload, plan and organise departmental workload, so effectively controlling the workflow patterns.

7. To compile the staffing rotas for the Radiology Department

8. To comply with all radiation protection policies such as IR(ME)R 2017 the Code of Practice for the Protection of Persons against Ionising Radiations arising from Medical and Dental use and the IRR 17 regulations

9. To adhere to safe systems of work with regard to manual handling

10. To carry out Quality Control procedures within the Department, including Quality Assurance testing for image quality and equipment safety, and to perform clinical audits within the Department.

11. To undertake radiography at other hospitals if required.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc Diagnostic Radiography or DCR Equivalent
  • HCPC registration
  • Teaching Qualification or equivalent experience


Desirable

  • Management qualification


Experience

Essential

  • Significant post qualification clinical experience
  • Experience of training and managing students
  • Experience of dealing with challenging situations
  • NHS experience.

  • Experience of project management or equivalent
