The neonatal unit has 4 intensive care cots, 3 high dependency cots and 9 special care cots and provides intensive care for babies from 26 weeks gestation onwards. There is a tier of middle-grade paediatricians and advanced neonatal nurse practitioners who cover both the general paediatric wards and neonatal unit and separate tier of ANNPs and medical staff at junior level.

The intensive care cots are fully equipped to provide medical intensive care including HFOV, inhaled nitric oxide and therapeutic hypothermia. The unit has excellent outcomes against NNAP standards and is one of three intensive care neonatal units based in the northern region.

Continuing professional development is encouraged and you will be expected to participate actively in research, quality and safety, audit and guidelines.

Job responsibilities

PLEASE REFER TO THE ATTACHED JOB DESCRIPTION FOR FULL DUTIES OF THE ROLE.

In neonates, first line medical cover is provided by 2 specialist trainees in RCPCH approved posts recognised for training by the Health Education North East, 2 neonatal trust grade doctors and four Advanced Neonatal Nurses Practitioners on the same rota. Tier 2 support is provided by 5 advanced neonatal nurse practitioners working at middlegrade level.

This role is suitable for applicants post foundation at ST1/2/3 level with experience working clinically within the NHS. It is ideally suited to candidates wishing to work in a large teaching hospital which provides many specialist services and is ideal for anyone wishing to pursue a career in paediatrics or neonatal medicine.

You will also be required to assist in preparing discharge letters, Initiation/change of treatment and discussions with relatives. Ward management- assist in wards rounds and attending to emergency calls.

Responsibilities include routine examination of the newborn and care of babies in the neonatal unit, attending at risk deliveries and on the post-natal wards. There will be adequate support and supervision from middle grade doctors and consultants.

The post holder will participate in the tier 1 on call rota. When on-call you will be expected to carry the emergency bleep and attend to calls.

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of recent quality Improvement Activity
  • Evidence of reflective practice


Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
  • Recent employment within the NHS
  • Completion of Foundation Programme by commencement of post or equivalent training
  • Demonstrate commitment to paediatrics and child health


Desirable

  • Membership of RCPCH
  • APLS/NLS certification


Knowledge & Skills

Essential

  • Possess good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Management and Leadership skills.
  • Be able to work as part of a team.
  • Be committed to teaching and training with regular commitment to continued development
  • Have skills or evidence of further plans to develop training skills.

  • Have evidence of good leadership skills in undertaking previous projects.
  • To have evidence of having worked well in teams and contributed to their success.
  • Possess further qualifications in teaching or educational supervision.
