An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join our team and provide operational leadership within the Surgical Histopathology Laboratory at Cardiff & Vale University Health Board.

This dynamic section provides surgical histopathology within the University Health Board and throughout south Wales across all specialties. The laboratory processes in excess of 30,000 requests per year and is well equipped, offering a wide repertoire of cellular pathology tests across routine, specials and immunohistochemistry. The laboratory is on a digital pathology journey, integrating whole slide scanning as part of the routine workflow.

Main duties of the job

You will lead the busy, dynamic laboratory area and will have a keen interest in and recent experience of all aspect of surgical histopathology service delivery gained in an NHS ISO 15189 accredited laboratory environment at a senior supervisory level.

The service, is undertaking work with Improvement Cymru, benefiting from learning and coaching from the Toyota Lean Management Centre.

The successful applicant will be expected to keep abreast of best practice and current scientific/clinical opinion in this growing and developing field.

You will be encouraged to realise relevant service development objectives .

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this role Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications

Essential

  • HCPC Registration
  • FIBMS/MSc
  • Management qualification


Experience

Essential

  • Current knowledge of, UHB and Welsh Diagnostic Strategic Direction
  • Significant experience working in a supervisory capacity in an NHS Cellular Pathology Laboratory
  • Understanding of issues currently affecting Cellular Pathology services


Communication and Relationship skills

Essential

  • Ability to articulate complex, sensitive or contentious information to patients and carers, the Clinical Board, Executive level staff and external agencies, such as National Pathology Program Board (NPPB)
  • Ability to motivate and organise staff teams
  • Ability to negotiate using persuasive communication tools.


Skills

Essential

  • Ability to operate independently in establishing ways in which organisational or government policies should be interpreted
  • Mental resilience to manage an unpredictable work pattern, requiring prolonged periods of concentration
  • Ability to collect analyse and interpret live, constantly changing information from a number of sources and act upon it as necessary
  • Experience of line managing a large staff group with complex needs
  • Responsibility for the procurement of capital equipment and maintenance or all physical assets
