We have a brand new role for a Learning Disabilities and Autism Lead Nurse to join our growing Safeguarding team and shape the future of our service at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust (BWC).

This is your chance to be a visible and impactful leader across both, Birmingham Women's Hospital (BWH) and Birmingham Children's Hospital (BCH). As the Lead Nurse for Learning Disabilities and Autism (LDA), you'll bring your expertise and innovative ideas to drive forward the LDA strategy, supporting our multidisciplinary teams in delivering exceptional, inclusive care for our patients with learning disabilities and/or autism. Our team are passionate about working towards accreditations in the future.

To provide professional nursing leadership through a strong visible clinical presence within the Learning Disabilities Liaison team and across BWC, to enhance midwifery and nursing practice and the provision of a safe effective and high-quality care environment for children, young people and their family and carers.

You will have a passion for leading and influencing continuous improvement methodologies to enhance our approach to supporting learning disabilities and autistic patients.

Main duties of the job

This role will work collaboratively with senior management, including the Associate Director for Safeguarding and Learning Disabilities and Heads of Nursing & Midwifery for inpatient and community services across our hospitals.

As Lead Nurse you will engage with colleagues across the Trust and key external partners e.g. primary care, local authorities, and community agencies. To build a comprehensive support network for patients and their families.

What You'll Bring:

A qualified nurse with current clinical and leadership experience of working with patients with learning disabilities and autism.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to support and empower the nurses in the LDA team, ensuring a compassionate, safe and inclusive environment for our patients.

An evidence-based approach to delivering high quality care, with expert skills in supporting and advocating for individuals with learning disabilities and autism.

Experience of driving change and shaping service improvements.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse
  • Current NMC Registration
  • Post registration course relevant to the Care of Patients with a Learning Disability and/or Autism
  • Educated to Degree Level


Desirable

  • Registered Learning Disabilities Nurse
  • Clinical leadership Course e.g., ILM


KNOWLEDGE & NATURE OF EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Extensive knowledge and current clinical experience of the care of Patients with a Learning Disability and/or Autism
  • Evidence of leadership experience
  • Evidence of on-going and current professional development
  • Evidence of managing staff and dealing with difficult situations
  • Understanding of clinical governance and risk assessment
  • Experience of implementing a change in practice
  • Evidence of audit or research projects


Desirable

  • Experience of managing complaints and investigations


ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENT SKILLs

Essential

  • Excellent communication skills - oral, written and telephone and ability to engage in complex communication situations where information may be highly sensitive, including having difficult conversations with patients, families, and staff
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate a high degree of autonomy
  • Proven ability to prioritise demanding workload and that of others and well organised and able to work in a challenging and busy environment
  • Able to apply judgement to complex set of facts or situations relevant to specialty which require analysis, interpretation and comparison data and recommendations.
  • Flexible to meet service needs
  • Proactive, self-motivated with an ability to motivate others
