Are you a qualified mental health nurse who is creative and reflective in your approach and have a genuine interest in working with people who are experiencing psychosis for the first time?

ESTEP, the Early Intervention in Psychosis Service, covering South East Essex are looking for an experienced mental health nurse to become an Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) Practitioner/ Care Co-ordinator.

Main duties of the job

Being part of someone's journey towards recovery is extremely powerful and rewarding. For people who have had a psychotic illness we offer a 3-year period of engagement with the team, this means that practitioners can take time to establish relationships and agree plans of care.

There are clear NICE guidelines in terms of a care plan offer and what should be included. Much of the first few months are about getting to know the person you are working with to develop trust and a shared understanding about what a person is experiencing and why.

The skills required to be an effective EIP practitioner are: to adapt your working approach to establish relationships with those people you work with, to balance clinical activity with good standards of record keeping on the electronic record, to be able to provide psychoeducation around psychosis, to be able to use assessment tools , to be able to engage with friends/families/carers, to be able to contribute to an MDT setting, to be able to engage in supervision and training, to have a good understanding of medication and the benefits of these, to have an understanding of CBT and the evidence that surrounds this to aid peoples recovery from psychosis. To be effective and skilled in assessing and managing risks, to be skilled in care planning.

Job responsibilities

To manage own caseload in line with C.P.A. procedures and risk management protocols.

To use evidence-based and client-centred principles to assess needs and to plan, implement and evaluate health and social care interventions

To create and continually update person-centred care plans and build therapeutic relationships with your clients.

To assess risk and design personalised risk management plans

To provide leadership for junior staff through supervision and appraisal.

To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of MDT services, holding personal responsibility for defined projects and areas of responsibility.

To mentor and supervise students on practice placements

To carry out MDT activities e.g. coordinating meetings and undertaking duty responsibilities

To identify any possible safeguarding concerns and be responsible for the completion of safeguarding investigations.

To ensure that the requirements of the Mental Health Act 1983 are observed, adhered to and implemented

To monitor physical health and promote physical wellbeing

To support the promotion of carer and service user involvement within the service and for its provision plus ensuring carer's needs are identified and responded to.

To provide profession-specific interventions for the wider team as required and in line with NICE guidelines

To participate in team training and mandatory training and ongoing professional development.
