We are an 18 bedded Trauma and Orthopaedic Ward, providing care for patients admitted to the hospital as result of an emergency admission. The ward provides care for a variety of injuries including fractures, soft tissue trauma and spinal injuries. Injuries can vary from relatively minor lacerations to complex road traffic trauma patients who require input from the plastic surgeons. We offer nurses a chance to develop their expertise in a range of orthopaedic skills within a friendly, welcoming team. Level 11 West is an ideal environment for both newly qualified nurses and for those wishing for gain experience within a new setting

We are able to offer opportunities for development and are in the process of developing an in-house accredited Orthopaedic module, which will be offered to Nurses working in the Trauma and Orthopaedic departments. We have a Practice Development Nurse to support you with your induction, learning new skills and ongoing daily support. In addition there is a preceptorship programme in place within the trust for newly qualified nurses. We also offer the opportunity to undertake additional roles within the ward, such as link nurse roles, which will be supported with additional training.

Main duties of the job

Participate in the assessment, implementation and delivery of individualised patient care seeking guidance where appropriate.

To report on the condition of patients to the Clinical Leader/Medical staff, assisting them in ascertaining treatments and ensure these are carried out.

To ensure that all patients' data is accurately recorded.

Ensure that all patients have nutritional assessment and that individual needs are fully met.

Be responsible for the control and custody of all medication and drugs in accordance with Trust policy.

To administer drugs as prescribed, checking and witnessing controlled drugs.

Ensure safe effective discharge planning, involving the multidisciplinary team as necessary.

Take charge of a group of patients, taking into account patient/relative/carers wishes.

Ensure that all patients' needs are identified and programmes of care implemented to meet individual needs.

Ensure that best practice care is delivered.

Work within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.

Act as a role model showing example in regard to behaviour, attitudes, conduct and appearance.

Expert Clinical Practice
  • To review patients on admission: ensure patients have timely access to appropriate investigations, referrals and assessments and that relevant personnel are informed.
  • Undertake clinical competencies relevant to nursing role.
  • To support staff when indicated in the management of challenging patients, families or situations.
  • To deal sensitively with patients and / or relatives / carers who may be exhibiting a high level of anxiety or aggression.
  • To be able to sympathetically convey unwelcome news to patients and / or relatives/carers regarding diagnosis and potential recovery.
