We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Specialty Doctor who has experience in Intellectual Disability Psychiatry to join the Ealing Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities. You will be joining a department who is passionate about providing a positive experience for people with learning disabilities.

The post sits within the Ealing Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities, Integrated Care Services, West London NHS Trust. The focus of the role will be to join multidisciplinary teams to provide clinical assessment and treatment to people with a learning disability with co-morbid mental health conditions.

The post holder will be part of the Ealing Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities psychiatry team. You will be offered high quality and consistent supervision from the Consultant Psychiatrist. In addition, there are excellent opportunities for continuing professional development through the local and regional academic programmes.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:
  • Provide assessment and treatment for patients 18 years plus with a learning disability and possible mental health illness with the multi-disciplinary team. This may include responding to urgent clinical need
  • Ensure that risk assessments are in place and care plans are in line with evidence-based practice, reviewed according to changing need
  • Ensure physical health monitoring is up-to-date
  • Participate in referral, team, business and clinical governance meetings, in addition to local and regional academic programmes
  • Liaise with relevant services to ensure smooth transition, whether this is to the community for in-patients or young people to adult services
  • Actively participate in the Care Programme Approach
  • Work closely with stakeholders and external organisations, social care and education to facilitate care and safeguarding needs

o Lead and participate in clinical audit, quality improvement and research that promotes and develops good standards of care

Job description Job responsibilities

The Trust is seeking a Specialty Doctor Psychiatrist (Terms and conditions of service for Specialty grade (England) 2021) to join the Ealing Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities. This is a new post and the Trust is supportive of SAS roles.

The Ealing Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities delivers care to adults with learning disabilities in the Borough of Ealing, with NHS staff working alongside Local Authority care functions for the learning disability population.

The post-holder will be accountable to the Consultant Psychiatrist, Ealing Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities, Dr Rupali Acharya and through them to the Director, Dr Claire Dillon.

Clinical Supervision will be provided on a monthly basis by the Consultant Psychiatrist, Ealing Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities. It will be the responsibility of the post-holder to ensure the meetings are scheduled in advance and arrangements made to reschedule if needed. The post holder will take an active part in work place based assessments.

The appointee will have a desk space in an office location with other members of the multidisciplinary clinical team at Ealing Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities, 62 Green Lane, Hanwell. The appointee will have access to clinical rooms, meeting rooms and kitchen area which is predominately available to the service and allow additional breakout space.

The post-holder will be provided with their own laptop with docking equipment supporting access to relevant West London NHS Trust systems and a work mobile phone.The Psychiatric Team at Ealing Community Team for People with Learning Disabilities is supported by a full time medical secretary administrator, who will support this post.

The post holder will have 6 PA. The overall split of the programmed activities is 4.5 PA direct clinical care, and 1.5 PA of Supporting Professional. These activities should be identified through annual appraisal and detailed in your Personal Development Plan and facilitated through a job planning process.

The CTPLD currently operates between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays). The service does not operate a rapid/crisis response service. All crisis and very urgent responses are directed to GPs, NHS 111, accident emergency departments and/or mainstream mental health services, including Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment (CRHT) teams for further advice and support. Specialist in-patient services are available within the North West London area.

There are no oncall responsibilities.

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
Elibibility Essential
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment
  • Good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
  • Minimum 4 years' experience post qualification and at (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or Shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
Desirable
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
Clinical knowledge Essential
  • Excellent clinical skills in the assessment and management of psychiatric disorders and comorbidities in adults with a learning disability
  • Training and experience in neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism and ADHD
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Excellent knowledge in speciality
  • Knowledge and experience in psychopharmacology as applicable to General Adult Psychiatry
Desirable
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
  • Experience in a variety of therapies
Academic skills and lifelong learning Essential
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills or willing to undertake training to improve this
  • Participated or demonstrate willingness to participate in continuous professional development
  • Has actively participated or demonstrate a willingness to participate in clinical audit and quality improvement programmes
Desirable
  • Experienced in clinical research and / or service evaluation
  • Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit or service improvement e.g. prizes or awards
  • Evidence of improving patient outcomes through service change or audit
