The Clinical Coding Department at Liverpool Women's Hospital is seeking an experienced Accredited Clinical Coder to join our supportive and skilled team.

The successful candidate will begin with an on-site induction period to ensure a smooth transition into the role. Following this, our empowered attendance policy allows those who meet required audit scores and productivity standards to work remotely if preferred. Remote staff are expected to attend occasional on-site meetings, events, and training sessions, typically about once per month.

We operate a flexible working policy with core hours from 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 15:00, Monday to Friday. Outside these hours, team members have the freedom to organise their own working hours, supporting a healthy work-life balance. Despite remote arrangements, the team maintains strong connections, encouraging collaboration with a network of peers.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for providing accurate and comprehensive clinical coding within the timescales agreed upon by the Trust and its partner organisations. They will be as subject matter experts for the specialties within the Trust.

In addition, they will assist the Clinical Coding & Data Quality Manager in monitoring daily worklists and offering guidance and mentorship to less experienced clinical coders.

A key aspect of this role involves handling inquiries related to the clinical coding process, collaborating with senior clinical staff, performing data quality checks, and participating in multidisciplinary meetings.

Job responsibilities

  • To be responsible for analysing and abstracting complex patient clinical records and applying clinical coding rules and conventions.
  • Inputting clinical coded data onto the Patient Administration System (PAS) for inpatient, day case and outpatient attendances within the timescales agreed between the Trust and user organisations.
  • To assist the Clinical Coding Manager in actively monitoring the completeness and timeliness of coding reporting within the strict monthly deadlines, raising any problems, including any backlogs, and their causes to the relevant divisional manager and any senior clinicians concerned.
  • To attend internal and external meetings, events, and training as and when required and participate in and organise clinical coding workshops, awareness sessions and roadshows for all levels of staff.
  • Attend multidisciplinary meetings to promote a thorough knowledge and understanding of clinical coding and its rules and conventions and raise awareness of the importance of complete, accurate and timely datato all levels of staff within the Trust.
  • To lead the development, implementation, promotion and maintenance of local policy and guidance agreements that relate to clinical coding issues within the divisions. Ensure that all local staff adhere to policy agreements and that they are reviewed regularly and stored in a logical fashion.
  • To assist in the induction, training and mentorship of all staff involved in clinical coding.
  • To be aware of the reporting requirements of the divisions and provide regular feedback on coding, where it affects these areas, as well as specialist advice on the interpretation of diagnosis and procedures.
  • To facilitate the data recall process by being the point of contact for providing details of codes used for specific diagnostic conditions and operative procedures for clinicians, service managers and information staff.
  • To communicate effectively with non-clinical staff, clinicians, nurses, midwives, and managers both internal and external to the trust on coding issues. Attend multidisciplinary meetings, which require clinical coding input, providing regular feedback on coding issues to divisional management and ward staff.
  • To participate in regular training to ensure that coding/leadership skills are continually being broadened and updated, by attending specialty workshops and in-house training as outlined in a personal development plan. Be responsible for maintaining their own portfolio of evidence.
  • To assist the Trust in maintaining a high data quality standard by raising queries regarding anomalies found in the recording of data held on the PAS with the appropriate staff. Any unresolved problems should be discussed with the Clinical Coding Manage

    ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENTAL SKILLS

    Essential

    • Ability to abstract and analyse complex patient records
    • Ability to use own judgement to translate complex cases
    • Ability to apply local and national clinical coding conventions


    Qualifications

    • ACC qualification


    Desirable

    • Supervisory Management Qualification or equivalent experience


    Experience

    Essential

    • A minimum of 3 years continuous experience as a Clinical Coder
    • Experience in mentoring staff new to the coding process

    • Experience of supervising staff


    Knowledge

    Essential

    • Comprehensive understanding of the Clinical Coding process including the purpose and uses of coded data, NHSE clinical coding standards
    • Knowledge of PAS systems
    • Experience in Microsoft Office and email systems (including Outlook/Groupwise)
    • Understanding of Healthcare Resource Groups - how they are assigned and used
    • Understanding of Financial Flows and why Clinical Coding is crucial to its success
    • Understanding of the Clinical Coding elements of Data Quality Indicator scores
    • Ability to prioritise and delegate work in accordance with Business needs


    Desirable

    • Experience coding obstetrics, gynaecology, and neonatal specialties
    • Evidence of ongoing professional development e.g. attendance at specialist coding workshops
    • Ability to motivate and supervise staff to achieve Trust Targets
