An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Band 5 Assistant Psychologist to join the newly formed Paediatric Neurology Psychology Service based at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. The post is permanent 0.46 WTE.

The successful applicant will join a supportive multidisciplinary team and make a significant contribution to the development of this newly established psychology service, which provides support to families of children and young people with a neurological condition.

Paediatric neurology psychology service is part of the wider Child Health Psychology Service in Cardiff and Vale UHB. Clinical supervision, joint working, CPD, training and peer support are integral to the service. The department enjoys a good relationship with the wider psychology community and South Wales Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology. The applicant will be a highly valued member of the department where we encouragecollegial working and actively promote a culture where open dialogue about improving inclusion and diversity for both service users and staff is welcomed and celebrated. There is potential for additional hours within the wider psychology department.

The post will suit someone who has experience or looking for experience with children, young people and families in a medical / neuropsychological setting. Those with other relevant experiences are strongly encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be involved in supporting psychological / neuropsychological assessment and interventions , co-facilitating groups and attending multidisciplinary team meetings. The post holder will assist with audit, literature reviews, developing resources, service evaluations, teaching / training and undertaking administrative tasks.

The work will involve inpatient andoutpatient work. All work will be supervised by the joint lead Dr Zoe Moss, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Dr Kathryn Bond, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications

Essential

  • An upper second-class honours degree or higher in Psychology with eligibility for graduate basis for chartership with the British Psychological Society.


Desirable

  • Post graduate training (workshops/ courses) in one or more specialties
  • Post graduate qualification in a relevant area of psychology, research or related discipline


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with adults and/or children and young people and their families who may present with challenges across a range of settings
  • Experience of working in an MDT
  • Understanding the importance and function of supervision


Desirable

  • Experience of applying clinical/counselling / neuro psychology in the NHS (counselling or psychological / neuropsychological interventions under supervision).
  • Experience working with a diverse range of communities
  • Previous experience of audit and/or service evaluation.
  • Awareness of and commitment to the promotion of equity, diversity and inclusion especially for marginalised groups


Skills

Essential

  • Skills in the use of a range of methods od psychological assessment, intervention, and management, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration (CBT, ACT)
  • An ability to communicate complex, sensitive or contentious information to patients, carers and colleagues in a way that addresses psychological resistance.
  • Under supervision, evidence of supporting audit, service development and innovation
  • Clearly demonstrated creative skills in developing service resources
  • Evidence of ability to manage competing demands (personal and/ or professional, time management and working autonomously


Desirable

  • Demonstrable skills and knowledge of developing and running groups
  • Ability to reflect on own experiences ( personal and / or professional) and open to reflecting on this in supervision


Special knowledge

Essential

  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of children and young people with a health condition.


Desirable

  • Ability to carry out standardised psychological / neuropsychological assessments.
  • Specialist knowledge related to the area of work.
