An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, motivated, and enthusiastic nurse to join our established children's epilepsy nursing team.The post holder would join the epilepsy specialist nurse team, providing care in the management of varying epilepsy seizure conditions across the Newcastle area.

The successful applicant will have significant post registration experience, ideally including children's epilepsy care. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about epilepsy care, self-motivated and innovative. You should have the ability to work autonomously, manage a large, shared caseload, forward thinking, responsive to the needs of patients and the service, and work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.

The post requires travel across the Newcastle area. A current driving licence, and car owner is essential.

Main duties of the job

  • Effectively manage a caseload under the clinical supervision of the Band 7
  • Effectively manage their time, coordinating clinics, community visits and MDT meetings
  • Maintain high standards of care within all care settings (including hospital, community and educational)
  • Provide a patient centred and holistic approach to optimise the patient's quality of life
  • Act as an advocate for the patients and their families
  • Work collaboratively with members of the multi-disciplinary team, including social, educational and voluntary sectors
  • Integrate with the Paediatric Epilepsy Network North East and Cumbria
  • The candidate should be proactive, forward thinking and innovative to support the service lead in continuously improving epilepsy care
  • Ensure compliance with our clinical governance framework, champion service user safety and dignity, and support colleagues in the drive for continuous improvement

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse specialist as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to provide guidance and support based on advanced level knowledge to patients, carers and health professionals concerning a specific disease/condition.

Within the sphere of specialist practice:
  • Is working towards advanced knowledge and skills within specialist sphere of practice.
  • Contributes to the facilitation of the planning, delivery and evaluation of care pathways for a designated group of patients.
  • Support the development of nursing practice within the specialist field and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge.
  • Contributes to training and education within specialist area.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential

  • Registered nurse (appropriate to branch)
  • Current NMC registration
  • Diploma plus specialist qualifications / experience within specialist area prepared to take degree level study
  • Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council standards for student supervision and assessment (formally Mentorship) if relevant to role
  • Current driving licence if relevant to role


Desirable

  • Degree in health related subject


Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Some post registration experience within related specialist area of practice
  • Extended clinical practice underpinned by training supervision & assessment
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy or project specific policy context
  • Has understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding
  • Evidence of on-going continuous professional development


Desirable

  • Research or audit experience
  • Evidence of contribution towards education and training programmes


Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Good IT skills
  • Effective report writing skills
  • Able to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Effective organisation and time management skills
