An opportunity has arisen within the Community Drug and Alcohol Team for a Community Substance Misuse Nurse to join a developing Substance Misuse Service.

The Community Substance Misuse Nurse will take responsibility for the effective care management of a clinical caseload of clients with substance misuse problems, including those with more complex health needs including co-occurring mental health/substance misuse and physical health complications.

This post is advertised as a Band 6, however applicants who do not currently hold all the necessary competencies to a Band 6 level are encouraged to apply and, if successful, will be appointed under Annex 21 rules whereby 75% of the top of Band 6 will be payable during the 12 months. Applicants would be supported to develop their competencies required to fulfil the role within 12 months. Following successful completion and successful attainment of skills and competences for the role, the post holder will then be paid at band 6 (minimum point on the scale). Failure to achieve the competencies in the designated timeframe could result in re-deployment.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an experienced Nurse within the Substance Misuse field to manage a caseload of clients with complex needs including related physical and mental health concerns.

The post holder will also undertake community based detoxification programmes, and have an active role in the effective management of BBV's.

To support the Team Leader in providing clinical leadership and supervision, particularly in regard to complex health needs and to act up for the Team Leader during periods of short-term absence.

To work in conjunction with the Team Leader and take the lead on agreed areas in the overall development, monitoring and evaluation of the service.To work in close collaboration with other partner agencies and act as a source of specialist advice in regard to individual service user care and service delivery.

The role also involves working with significant others, and working within an overall recovery focused treatment model. The team works closely with other specialist statutory and third sector substance misuse agencies.

Experience in adult mental health and/or general health care settings would also be an advantage. The post holder will be involved with key areas of practice and service development, and strengthen links with partner agencies in mental health and general care settings.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

  • RMN/RGN
  • Additional Specialist Knowledge in Substance Misuse Treatment Interventions to diploma level study or equivalent experience


Desirable

  • Qualification or accreditation in Supervision


Experience

Essential

  • Substantial experience in substance misuse or mental health field in a clinical capacity
  • Proven experience of working with persons with substances misuse and mental health problems
  • Working in community setting
  • Contributing to clinical practice/service developments
