An exciting opportunity has arisen for Paediatric Nurse/s with experience in Oncology and Haematology to work on our unit. We are looking for experienced nurses who are ready to progress and increase their knowledge and skills in Haematology and Oncology.

This vacancy is on the Haematology and Oncology unit and is a development rotation post, it will consist of 7 months on Ward 6, 4 months in day care and 1 month with speciality nurses. We encourage an eagerness to develop your clinical skills and have a dedicated Clinical Educator to guide and support your development. We are looking for nurses who are experienced in paediatric oncology and haematology, with excellent clinical, organisational and communication skills.

The unit comprises a 16 bedded in patient facility, 9 bedded Day Care Unit and a very busy dedicated out patient's clinic area. The thriving multi-disciplinary team includes a Bone Marrow Transplant and Apheresis Team, Paediatric Oncology Outreach Team, Late Effects Service, Haemophilia and Non Malignant Haematology Service.

Main duties of the job

  • To take charge of the ward, allocate patients and manage day-to-day coordinator tasks
  • To co-ordinate and provide skilled nursing care to patients, in accordance with responsibilities under the NMC Code of Conduct.
  • Act as an advocate for patients.
  • To plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for an allocated patient group, in consideration of individual need, using prioritisation and delegation skills.
  • To assist the Ward Manager in managing and developing the Ward/Department.
  • To work collaboratively within a Multidisciplinary team, internal and external to the organisation, to facilitate holistic seamless care delivery for all Trust Patients.
  • To give leadership to junior staff and manage the Ward/Unit in the absence of the ward manager.
  • To support the ward manager in his/her role and participate in managing the ward, staff and resources, to maintain standards within the clinical governance agenda.
  • To represent the ward manager at relevant meetings and forums.
  • To deputise for the ward manager when required and act as role model and leader to other junior staff.

    Person Specification

    Qualifications and Training

    Essential

    • Degree or Diploma Level Education as Registered Nurse (RN Child, RNLD or RSCN)
    • Willingness to undertake speciality specific training
    • Teaching, Mentoring and Assessors qualification
    • Current registration with NMC


    Desirable

    • Willingness to undertake study at degree level
    • Relevant Post Basic registration Course


    Experience

    Essential

    • Substantial staffing experience within paediatrics and evidence of competencies achieved
    • Mentoring experience with nursing students and one-to one teaching of junior staff
    • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to professional development


    Desirable

    • Staffing experience within speciality
    • Relevant project work
    • Understanding of budgetary or resource management
    • Risk Assessment training


    Knowledge and Skills

    Essential

    • Role of Senior Staff Nurse and ability to work within and lead a team
    • Understanding of the clinical governance agenda
    • Experience of undertaking the audit process
    • Health, Safety and Risk awareness
    • Awareness of resource management
    • Health & Safety Safe Practices e.g. Moving and Handling, Sharps, COSHH, Information Governance
    • Responsibility for safe practices of Infection Control principles
    • Principles of Safeguarding of children & training to Level 3


    Desirable

    • Experience in Nursing Speciality of ward or department
    • Able to demonstrate involvement and understanding of the Research process
    • Current certificates to show relevant study and e-learning
