We are looking for a Band 5 Paediatric Nurse who has the passion and drive to join our dynamic haematology/oncology and bone marrow transplant team.

Our paediatric haematology, blood and marrow transplantation unit, Grand Union Ward, at St Mary's Hospital specialises in the care of children with haemoglobinopathies and red cell disorders, bone marrow transplantation and bone marrow failure syndromes. As the only level 2 shared care paediatric oncology unit (POSCU) in north west London, we also care for children who present with oncological emergencies. Experience in caring for this complex cohort of patients is desirable but not essential.

The transplant team has undertaken several innovative transplants using alternative donors for children with haemoglobinopathies and bone marrow failure. We also provide a comprehensive service for the management of children with sickle cell disease and thalassaemia, including a dedicated teenage and young adult transition service.

We are the specialist Haemoglobinopathy centre in the Paediatric Imperial Red Cell Network, providing tertiary services to local patients and outreach services to Haemoglobinopathy patients at hospitals across North West London.

Main duties of the job

o To work alongside the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) in the management of children with a variety of haematology and oncology conditions, some of which are undergoing bone marrow transplant.o Provide high quality and evidence based after-care and ensure patients and family are well supported prior to discharge.o Support management of ward and ensure the unit is run in line with national safety guidelines.o The post holder will support junior members of the team and student nurses to ensure the delivery of high quality patient care and provide support as needed.o To offer an individual service and psychological support to patients and their families respecting their diverse backgrounds.o Provide specialist nursing advice to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients/clients and relatives/carers without supervision in collaboration with the MDT.o To work across hospital where this is indicated and as the needs of the service change.

  • Experience of caring for sick patients in a variety of settings

  • 6 months post registration experience in a ward environment
  • Experience caring for children undergoing bone marrow transplant
  • Experience of change management - positive change agent
  • Experience working with newly qualified nurses and students


Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to manage own patient workload
  • Knowledge of research and audit
  • Competency in medication administration including IV drug administration or willingness to undergo training
  • Able to prioritise and meet deadlines.


Desirable

  • Ability to take charge of a ward or part of a ward, delegate and supervise junior staff
  • Leadership skills
  • Competency in cannulation/ venepuncture
