Working alongside the EDI-RU director and the EDI-RU manager this post will be responsible for supporting Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Research Unit (EDI-RU) Clinical Trials and research activities, including preparing grants, reports, and academic papers.

The role focuses on development and delivery of projects to address inequalities in access, care experience, and outcomes - especially in underserved and marginalised communities as exemplified by the Randomised Clinical Trial (RCT) to evaluate the cost- and clinical effectiveness of Culturally-adapted Family Intervention(CaFI) for people from African-Caribbean backgrounds experiencing psychosis.

Main duties of the job

To assist with writing of funding applications for research
  • To regularly liaise with the study collaborators and other stakeholders to identify and recruit eligible study participants
  • To assist with the promotion of the research to stakeholders
  • To contribute towards and write papers about the research in high profile reports and publications
  • To help present information on research progress and outcomes to management groups
  • To assist with the presentation of research findings at internal and external meetings, and conferences nationally and internationally and
  • To liaise with research colleagues and support administrative staff on routine matters.
  • To conduct and write systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses for publication and to inform future research and grant applications.
  • To contribute to the development/design of qualitative and quantitative studies with the members of the team.
  • To assist with the running of any pilot trials or research studies conducted within the team.
  • To liaise with relevant funding bodies, research support network (e.g. NIHR Research Design Service) and R& I departments of partner organisations

Job description
Job responsibilities

The postholder will be a postgraduate/post-doctoral researcher. The postholder must be able to take significant responsibility for planning and implementation of specific elements of the research activities. Banding reflects the level of autonomy, knowledge, skills, and experience needed to successfully undertake the role.

The successful candidate will be able to conduct systematic literature reviews to extract pertinent information and undertake pilot/feasibility work. The postholder will have effective communication and management skills to enable networking across the Trust and developing successful collaborators with external partners. Given the centrality of PPIE to the trial, the RA will have experience of facilitating Expert by Experience input into all aspects of our work, including data collection, analysis, and dissemination.

Experience in conducting research studies and mixed methods research, including conducting interviews and coding qualitative data, is essential. The RA will need knowledge of Randomised Control Trials (RCT) and associated quantitative research methods skills. Other activities will include data analysis, assisting with relevant systematic reviews/meta-analyses, preparing peer-reviewed publications, and contributing to innovation in dissemination of research findings.

Person Specification
Education/Qualifications
Essential
  • oGood honours degree (upper second class (2.1) or above or equivalent) in psychology, Social Care, health sciences, social sciences (or related) with good knowledge of the subject area
  • oMSc in a related subject
Desirable
  • oDoctoral degree (completed or submitted) in a health/ social care/ mental health related subject)
Experience
Essential
  • oExperience of conducting and analyzing qualitative research
  • oExperience of conducting research in mental health
  • oExperience of statistical and qualitative computer packages (e.g. SPSS, STATA or an equivalent statistical package and nVivo)
  • oExperience of conducting quantitative and analysing research
Desirable
  • oExperience working with people with severe mental illness
  • oExperience working in NHS-based mental health or social care environments with service user or carer contact
Knowledge

  • oKnowledge/experience of analysis and interpretation of statistical/analytical research outcomes
