This is an exciting opportunity within Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust Trauma and Orthopaedics department to recruit a full time Lead Nurse for the Trauma service. This is a role for a clinical leader Nurse role and will facilitate the trauma pathway for all trauma patients from admission to discharge while working alongside the whole Multidisciplinary team. The individual must have a passion and sound knowledge or orthopaedics and be able to take the lead to provide high standards of individualised patient care from planning , assessing and implementing care. This is a multifaceted role the crosses the traditional boundaries between nursing and medicine, which facilitates the trauma process for all trauma patients from their admission to discharge .
Main duties of the job
The Trauma Practitioner will work closely with the orthopaedic medical teams to provide efficient and effective patient care for trauma patients throughout Northampton Generla Hospital . The post holder will work in a variety of settings such as the A& E, the Orthopaedic wards and Fracture clinics. The post holder will demonstrate strong clinical assessment skills, clinical leadership and clinical decision making skills. The post holder will work collaboratively with members of the multidisciplinary teams, anaesthetics and theatres to improve patient flow and promote efficient trauma care. The TNP will facilitate efficient for hip and femoral fractures to achieve BPT and will be involved in Iliac fossa blocks, data collection for the NHFD, research and audit projects. The Trauma service runs currently a 6 day service with the scope to extend to a 7 day rota working on a longer day shift pattern which includes weekend working.
The post holder will be a registered nurse and is required to work autonomously at an advanced level. They will require a qualification in health assessment and clinical examination and require good clinical decision making skills and a commitment to on-going learning at masters level. A broad knowledge of trauma and orthopaedic or muscular skeletal conditions is essential. A non medical prescribing qualification would be desirable.

The post holder will be proactive within the daily consultant led trauma ward rounds, contributing to the review and treatment planning for all trauma patients.
Ensuring treatment plans are communicated and implemented.
Liaising with other clinical teams to optimise patients for their surgery.
Contribute to the planning and organisation of the trauma theatre list.
Provide an outreach service for outlying patients, including regular review of patients to ensure plan of care is implemented. They will offer support and advice for trauma patients and staff throughout Northampton General Trust.

Provide the interface between the clinical trauma service, patients and relatives to explain current treatment plans, delays and cancellations in treatment.
Provide education information and advice to other professionals, including medical and surgical teams across the Acute Unit, district nurses, GPs, practice nurses, community hospitals and community therapists.
The post holder will take an active role in getting patients with hip fractures to achieve Best Practice Tariff for Hip Fractures. They will drive the process and be an active part of the audit process, contributing to NHFD and the Harm reviews for hip fractures.

Application of skin and skeletal traction

Providing information and taking informed consent or working towards consenting patients
Undertake clinical assessment to assist Consultants in making multifaceted complex clinical decisions regarding patient management and clinical outcomes, including, where appropriate, listing patients for trauma procedures and discharging patients from the service when treatment is complete.
Demonstrate a high level of competence in examination skills.
Facilitates the Trauma admissions process for trauma patients admitted to the Trust.
Participates in the daily on call orthopaedic consultant trauma meeting and trauma rounds.
Uses advanced knowledge and skills to accelerate the admissions process through the A& E department and fast-tracking hip fracture patients as appropriate.
Ensures all trauma patients have a detailed care plan, which reflects the specialist trauma care patients receive for their condition or injury.
Ensures patients are medically fit for surgery or makes appropriate referrals to other specialities for assessment or treatment of conditions, which prevents patients having surgery. Requesting investigations that assist in optimisation of patients for surgery.
Works in conjunction with the Site team to repatriate and/or transfer trauma patients form the other trusts to Northampton.
Facilitates good communications with all agencies involved in the continuity of patient care.
Provides efficient and effective liaison, co-ordinates and facilitates multi-disciplinary care for outlying trauma patients.
Acts as a resource for patients, relatives and carers requiring information and advice regarding episodes of care.
Take referrals for ambulatory trauma cases, ensure the patient is prepared and schedule cases on the theatre lists. Maintain the Ambulatory referrals trauma board
Advice and support for medical and nursing staff
Outcome data collection e.g. NHFD
