Full-time (37.5hours/week)

Working pattern - 7 day service with 3 shift patterns Monday through Friday. Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays run a 1 shift system.

As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, you must be HCPC registered with a BSc in Biomedical Sciences (or equivalent) preferably with at least 5 years post registration experience in Histology. In addition, candidates must have completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio. This must clearly be indicated on your application form.

Heavy consideration will also be given to candidates who are Registered Biomedical Scientist's with at least 5 years Histology laboratory experience (pre or post registration). These candidates will be expected to complete their specialist portfolio within a 3 year period (from employment).

In addition, candidates who are in the process of completing their specialist portfolio will be supported through to completion within a 2 year period (from employment).

Main duties of the job

To perform the laboratory duties required in the analysis of histological and diagnostic cytology clinical specimens, in order to ensure effective patient diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. The post holder will fulfil the departmental KPI's and departmental objectives of a delivering a service run over 7 days with high quality analytical and interpretive laboratory provision to benefit of patient care.

The post holder will be required to work as part of a large team, providing support to our scientific and clinical teams within the department. The post holder will rotate through all sections of our Histology laboratory and undertake data, extract and manipulation, specimen dissection (low level RCPath category transfer trim and dissection), handling and processing, microtomy, routine and specialist staining (H& E, special stains and Immunocytochemistry), renal biopsy processing and frozen section preparation. We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic HCPC registered Specialist or Registered Biomedical Scientist to join our team based in the HistologyDepartment at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, Stoke-On-Trent.

You must be a strong team player and leader, who has a positive attitude to change and service evolution, with excellent laboratory, organisational and communication skills.

Please note the post holder will be required to participate in a shift rota with a 7 day working pattern with 3 shift patterns Monday through Friday following a month period of training. Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays run a 1 shift system(Agenda for Change terms and conditions apply).

Knowledge, Training and Education

Essential

• oIBMS Specialist Portfolio (or equivalent)
• oRegistered Histology Biomedical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
• oBSc (Hons) Biomedical degree of equivalent.
• oAdvanced working knowledge of Histopathology techniques and practices.
• oCompetence in basic tissue transfer and/or dissection.

Experience

Essential

• oFor Specialist BMS's, at least 5 years post registration Histology laboratory experience OR for Registered BMSs, at least 5 years pre or post registration Histology laboratory experience
• oWorking in an acute NHS Trust
• oWorking in a busy laboratory environment
• oSupervising staff
• oTraining trainee / support staff
• ooWorking with, maintaining and troubleshooting complex and specialist laboratory equipment
