We are recruiting a Junior Sister/Charge Nurse for our Short Stay Unit, The Coleman Unit (TCU) and Adult Day Surgery Unit, which are both mixed sex wards. ADSU comprises of 14 trolleys for day case patients and TCU comprising of 14 beds and supports short stay patients up to 5 days, undergoing a wide range of surgical and diagnostic procedures.

You must have excellent communication and leadership skills, enjoy interacting with people and being part of a busy fast paced Short Stay Unit. You will be working closely with and be well supported by experienced Ward Manager, junior sisters, friendly Clinical Nurse Specialists, and world class orthopaedic surgeons. This post is an ideal opportunity to develop further leadership skills. By being an effective leader and role model you will work flexibly as a member of the ward team. Responsibilities include leading the team and organizing the daily activity of a busy Orthopaedic Unit for pre and post-operative patients. In support of the Ward Sister/ Charge nurse you will ensure standards are maintained, evaluated, initiated and where necessary improved.

As an individual and as part of a team you will have the opportunity to learn and contribute to new developments within the service through research.

This post requires Staff rotation between: The Coleman Unit (TCU) and Day Surgery Unit (DSU)

Staff required to undertake long days/night shifts and Weekends

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the unsupervised assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of plans of care, ensuring high standards of evidence based care using a defined model of care.

To undertake all nursing procedures in accordance with the Trust policies and procedures and ensure that these procedures and policies are understood and adhered to by all staff, within own management responsibility.

To work in collaboration with colleagues to ensure patients have access to appropriate timely, good, quality information relating to their care and be active in the delivery of this information to patients.

To facilitate early discharge planning enabling appropriate arrangements to be in place for patients leaving hospital, making referrals and providing information to community services, as required, in order to achieve a safe and timely discharge from hospital.

To maintain accurate and comprehensive nursing records using appropriate documentation.

Ensure safe custody and administration of drugs according to The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Trust Policy and procedures, including intravenous medication where appropriate.

Job responsibilities

To ensure high standards of care are given to all patients, monitoring this through spot checks and clinical quality indicators outcome measures.

Contribute to patient and relative feedback by undertaking daily clinical rounds with the aim of providing excellent standards of care.

To collaborate in the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of plans of care, ensuring high standards of evidence based care.

To ensure communication with patients and significant others is established, ensuring empathy and reassurance regarding, assessment, care and treatment.

Be accountable at all times for ensuring that safeguards are in place for patients, in particular those adults or children at risk. To facilitate early discharge planning being carried out to enable appropriate arrangements to be in place for patients leaving hospital or transferring in order to achieve a safe and timely discharge from hospital.

To ensure that all patients are cared for in a clean and well-maintained clinical area, ensuring that all staff are aware that they are directly responsible for cleanliness standards when in charge and escalating issues when necessary.

Education & professional Qualifications

Essential

• First Level Registration
• Recognized teaching and assessing qualification or working towards
• Evidence of recent and ongoing professional development

Desirable

• Post qualification in relevant speciality

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential

• At least 2 years at Band 5 or equivalent
• Experience of managing a ward/ department in the absence of the ward manager
• Demonstrates understanding of the importance of audit/quality
• Working with a wide range of professionals

Desirable

• Awareness of current professional nursing issues

Skills and aptitudes

Essential

• Ability to communicate effectively with a multi-disciplinary team
• Ability to teach, supervise and assess qualified and unqualified staff
• Competent in Immediate Life Support (ILS)
