To work alongside Nurses, ODPs, Health Care Assistants, administration staff and consultant anaesthetists in the pre-operative assessment department POAC to deliver outstanding patient care. The post holder will undertake clinical duties delivering the highest quality service for patients on a day to day basis. The staff nurse or ODP in POAC is responsible for the pre-operative assessment of adult patients having a planned surgical procedure for their fitness for general anaesthetic and surgery within Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will be responsible for patient centred assessments which includes liaising with patients, their carers, and the multi disciplinary team. The pre- assessment covers the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient.
POAC clinic is open from 8-6 Monday to Friday but may extend into evening and weekends, should the service require.
POAC is currently on site at Musgrove Park Hospital and offices at County Hall for hybrid working, POAC may move off site in the future
Main duties of the job

The staff nurse or ODP in POAC is responsible for the pre-operative assessment of adult patients having a planned surgical procedure for their fitness for general anaesthetic and surgery within Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will be responsible for patient- centred assessments which includes liaising with patients, their carers, and the multi- disciplinary team. The pre- assessment covers the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient.
The registered nurse or ODP will undertake a comprehensive digital clinical assessment alongside interpreting any necessary investigations. Results are interpreted in order that appropriate support can be initiated, or escalated for further review, to allow the planned surgery or inpatient treatment to take place. These assessments are currently being undertaken primarily over the telephone on site and at our hybrid offices at County Hall. Face-to-face assessments of patients are also taking place within MPH. The Nurse/ODP will be responsible for their own caseload of patients under multiple specialities. This will involve using multiple IT systems and prolonged computer work.
