Job Details

This is an opportunity for individuals who are interested in developing specialist skills in the care and treatment of older people with complex emotional needs (CEN).

It is the first ever post for a CEN specialist within Older People Services in NSFT. The aim is to support development of a complex emotional needs service for older people. This service will focus only on people with CEN who are impacted by the aging process, complex physical health, frailty and social issues related to advancing age.

We promote an integrated way of working and welcome candidates who are qualified general nurses, mental health nurses, social workers and occupational therapists with experience of working with older adults in general hospitals, nursing homes, social care services or other third sector services.

The ideal candidate would have training in KUF, DBT or SCM but it is not essential as the service is dedicated to provide the training.

Main duties of the job

The job will involve specialist care co-ordination and treatment for a small number of service users with CEN who live in their own homes, in care homes or who have been admitted to the acute hospital and would benefit from an approach to improve their ability to tolerate and manage their emotions and come to terms with loss related to the aging process. A key components of this role is to work as a part of a multidisciplinary community mental health team, supporting their practice by delivering and advising on DBT based interventions and contributing to psychological team formulations. The job will also involve liaising with and advising our colleagues in Primary Care, Ipswich Hospital, Social Care and third sector partners, delivering to them in-house training to enhance their skills in care planning and the safe management of older adults with complex emotional needs.

Main duties of the job
You will be responsible for a small caseload of service users who have complex emotional needs. You will work as a member of the MDT ensuring that high quality individualised care is delivered and that this promotes recovery and maximise independence.

You will liaise with and advice the practitioners in Primary Care, Ipswich Hospital, Social Care and third sector partners, deliver to them in-house training to enhance their skills in care planning and the safe management of older adults with complex emotional needs.

About us

We are a multidisciplinary team of clinicians with strongly embedded values of working together in a positive and respectful way. We are diverse in background, profession, and experience. Each of us is valued for having unique strengths and for their contributions towards the common goal of providing high quality mental health care for older adults. Our team was recently received a commendation for 'Improving Quality Through Innovation' as a finalist in the Trust Staff Excellence Awards and is in the process of achieving accreditation with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

We are placed in the Ipswich town centre, a short walking distance from local amenities and the train station. We support older adults living in the community in the Ipswich area. The central location of the office and small geographical area and the nature of our work give us lots of flexibility at work and many options for a nice lunch break! We meet the service users at Mariner House or at their homes. Due to our convenient location, we have the opportunity to walk or to cycle for some visits. We promote hybrid working. The professional meetings, telephone contacts and administration work can be completed remotely but we require office attendance to cover a duty work and face to face appointments for the service users who require it.

Diane Hull - NSNHSFT

Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is the main provider of specialist mental health services for the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, serving a population of 1.6 million people. We are a large organisation covering a wide geographical area divided into ‘Care Groups'. There are also Care Groups supporting children, family and young people’s services, and specialist services, including Forensic mental health services.

Each Care Group has its own Leadership team, with the aim of supporting clinically led decision making locally, to support the needs of people accessing services.

We have inpatient facilities across both counties with smaller bases in rural locations. Many of the Trust’s services are offered in the community, enabling people accessing services to receive the support they need in an environment familiar to them.

At NSFT we believe in recovery and wellbeing, and understand the importance of good physical health, maintaining relationships and achieving a balance between treatments and continuing an active life.

The people in our care, families and carers are at the centre of all aspects of all we do and are vital in helping shape and support our service strategy. Our strategy supports and enables people with mental health problems to live a fulfilling life and make their personal recovery journey.
