Main duties of the job

As a Ward Manager, the post holder will be responsible for general management of the ward and safe delivery of patient care including the assessment of care needs, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, setting of standards and the supervision and deployment of staff.

As an active part of the care team, the post holder is expected to provide direct patient care when necessary. It is essential that they can use initiative and work without direct supervision. They will deputise for the Locality Matron and ensure that appropriate staffing and levels of service are maintained, taking management responsibility for the ward as a whole on a shift by shift basis.

The post involves teaching pre and post registration students and NVQ candidates as well as some ongoing responsibility for project management. This post involves shift working covering unsocial hours, weekends and some bank holidays as well as internal rotation onto nights.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse Level 1
  • Evidence of continuing professional development to underpin clinical reasoning skills and ability to undertake assessment, analysis and treatment


Desirable

  • Relelvant post graduate modules/qualfication in physical assessment
  • Relevant post graduate modules/qualification in palliative care


Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 3 -5 years in a senior role
  • Experience of multi-professional and cross organisational work
  • Experience of performance management
  • Experience of Project/service development
  • Experience working in a community hospital setting
  • Experience of Human Resource management including recruitment and retention
