UHB have a large, Paediatric service ran by a friendly, dynamic, talented team of professionals we deliver high quality, compassionate care to the local community and beyond. We strive to provide a positive patient experience in a safe environment and we actively promote a family centred approach in the delivery of care.

We have a 4 bedded Level 2 HDU at Heartlands Hospital and a HDU stabilisation bed at Good Hope hospital. Our team work across both sites to provide HDU care to all children and work collaboratively as an established multi-disciplinary team. Children may present with unexpected serious illness, have had a deterioration of chronic illness, been admitted for complicated surgery or are stepping down from ITU, you will be responsible for providing safe and effective nursing care to these children and support your colleagues.

We operate a 24 hour, 7 day a week shift pattern but are willing to discuss flexible working if this is important for your work, life balance.

Main duties of the job

As a band 5 Nurse working for the Paediatric High Dependency service across Heartlands & Good Hope Hospital, you will join a highly skilled, established team caring for critically ill children at UHB.

As a staff nurse you will practice autonomously and be responsible and accountable for delivering safe, compassionate, person centred care.

You are required to demonstrate evidence based nursing care that respects and maintains dignity and human rights.

You will be skilled in the assessment of patient care needs, recognising deterioration, escalating safely and appropriately.

You will plan and implement programmes of care, delivering treatment and evaluating care without direct supervision.

You must be able to communicate effectively and maintain high quality records.

You will work in accordance with Trust Policies, Procedures and Guidelines and adhere to the NMC Code.

We promote a family centred care approach to nursing and collaborate closely with parents, carers and their children when planning and delivering care.

The post holder will practice in a holistic, non-judgmental, caring and compassionate manner that avoids assumptions, supports social inclusion and recognises and respects individual choice and acknowledges diversity. They will work in partnership with other health and social care professionals, students and trainees and agencies, service users, their carer's and families.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • * Registered Paediatric Nurse on the NMC register
  • * Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC


Experience

Essential

  • * Experience of working with children in an acute secondary NHS care setting/emergency care/ critical care setting.
  • * Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development/competence
  • * Experience of working independently and in a team in a health care environment delegating to others within a team / providing supervision to others
  • * Experience as a practice supervisor / assessor to meet Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment
  • * Understanding and knowledge of the NMC code of conduct
  • *Understanding of preceptorship and work based learning and assimilation of skills and knowledge
  • * Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context
  • * Understanding / experience of the principles of safeguarding and Mental Capacity
  • * Awareness of health and safety issues
