The post holder will support the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in the organisation and daily running of the Outpatient department and be responsible for clinical practice development within the Outpatient Department. They will be responsible for ensuring that delivery of care to adults is evidence based, and is also responsible for the delivery of training.

Main duties of the job

1.1 Work in partnership with all staff, patients and their families in order to support and encourage involvement in their care, thus supporting family centred care

1.2 Responsible for facilitating, setting, compiling and maintaining optimum standards of nursing care, ensuring that nursing guidelines and policies are adhered to

1.3 Participates in the clinical care of adults in all Outpatients areas, working alongside and supporting all staff in practice as a Band 6 nurse, and undertakes all duties of a Band 6 nurse

1.4 Supports the development of evidence based care and discharge of patients and their families ensuring they receive safe and competent care during their stay

1.5 Maintains own clinical competence in clinical practice both within the Trust, and by identification of own learning needs external to the Trust

Managerial responsibilities:

2.1 Reports to the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse, Matron/ADON or General Manager any concerns in relation to patient care, the environment, staffing or anything that may affect the service as a whole

2.3 Maintains accurate staff records in relation to study leave, ensuring that the Trust training database is kept up to date

2.4 Reports any concerns to the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse, Matron/ADON, General Manager in relation to safeguarding.

Job responsibilities

  • Managerial responsibilities:

  • 1.1 Reports to the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse, Matron/ADON or General Manager any concerns in relation to patient care, the environment, staffing or anything that may affect the service as a whole

    1.2 Reports any accidents or incidents involving patients, relatives and staff. Completes statements and incident form, reporting such incidents appropriately, supporting investigations as required

    1.3 Maintains accurate staff records in relation to study leave, ensuring that the Trust training database is kept up to date

    1.4 Reports any concerns to the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse, Matron/ADON, General Manager in relation to safeguarding. Liaises with Safeguarding leads or other professionals as appropriate. Responsible for ensuring that all staff attend Safeguarding training

    1.5 Responsible for developing the provision of evidence based care, ensuring that there is effective communication within the department and liaison with members of the multi-disciplinary team and other services as required

    1.6 Ensures that all staff have the skills to access evidence bases to inform their own practice

    1.7 Exercises leadership within the department, and supervises and co-ordinates the work of the ward team in relation to day to day running, and practice development

    1.8 Undertakes duties on different wards or departments within the Trust as required by service demands, within the 24hr period

    Professional responsibilities:

    3.1 Organises, gives assistance to and mentors newly appointed staff, as part of their orientation process

    3.2 Acts as an effective role model to all staff, students, patients and their families as a Band 6 nurse

    3.3 Promotes and maintains a professional appearance and manner at all times in accordance with Trust policy

    3.4 Responsible for the promotion of accurate documentation and information systems both manually and by using the departments IT systems

    3.5 Maintains and promotes confidentiality at all times ensuring that information is only given out with appropriate permission

    3.6 Responsible for actively maintaining a safe environment for patients and families, visitors and other staff, as required by the Health and Safety at Work Act, Health and Safety policy, Risk Management policy and COSHH regulations

    3.7 Acknowledges and abides by the Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses and is guided by advisory documents issued by the NMC

    3.8 Maintains and develops own professional practice, keeping abreast of new developments and concepts, both clinical and professional

    3.9 Maintains good relationships with staff organisations and voluntary bodies

    3.10 Liaises with other Practice Development Nurses within the Division, in particular the PDNs within Childrens Services in relation to children and Young People within the Outpatients setting

    Education and development responsibilities:

    4.1 Work alongside staff, parents, patients and students, to ensure there is a unified understanding of the needs of the patient

    4.2 Take part in multi-disciplinary meetings to contribute and encourage new ideas

    4.3 Attends other study days and development opportunities as identified by the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse as being relevant to their sphere of practice

    Person Specification

    Education and Training

    Essential

    • Registration as a nurse on the NMC register
    • ENB 998 or equivalent
    • Committed to personal professional development and evidence of further study
    • Diploma or degree or working towards
    • ALS skills
    • Willing to discuss role with a view to expanding practice


    Desirable

    • Second degree or diploma
    • Management qualification
    • Cannulation /phlebotomy skills
    • Evidence of further study
    • HDU experience

    Experience

    Essential

    • At least five years experience working in an acute care environment as a trained nurse
    • Previous management experience
    • Committed to developing role as Clinical Practice Educator
    • Willing to take charge of the ward/department and deputise for the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse
    • In depth knowledge of safeguarding


    Desirable

    • Experience of other care settings
    • Previous practice development experience
    • Previous Band 6 experience
