The post holder will:

Work within the Early Years Speech and Language Therapy and Child Development Service Teams to provide a highly specialist assessment and diagnostic service as part of a multidisciplinary team, for assessment and diagnosis of Autism and related disorders using relevant standardised assessments of children's language, communication and interaction skills (such as the ADOS).

Deliver highly specialist clinical services to children across the age range including developing, implementing and evaluating specialist programmes of care, advice and support for preschool children with developmental speech, language delays / disorders and social communication differences. The role will include supporting parents, clients and other health and education professionals in all issues related to client management and delivering parent workshops to support understanding of ASD pre and post-diagnosis.

Main duties of the job

To conduct highly specialist Speech and Language Therapy assessments to support the differential diagnosis of broad range of complex neuro-developmental conditions. This will involve assessment and differential diagnosis of children with probable comorbidities and differing social and educational contexts.

To assess, develop and implement highly specialist Speech and Language Therapy programmes of care to meet the needs of clients, in collaboration with other professionals adapting practice to meet individual patients' circumstances.
  • To write comprehensive reports to be shared with families and a range of professionals, reflecting specialist knowledge including initial assessment/review reports, EHCNA, Annual Reviews and Tribunal reports.

Job responsibilities

To take a delegated role or lead, as requested by SLT Leadership team, in working groups, policy development groups, specific projects and events.

To use highly specialist knowledge to inform line manager on issues of service delivery/ policy development, including access and equity shortfalls and service pressures.

To develop care protocols/packages relating to specialist area in liaison with Team Leader to improve client care.
  • To interpret clinical guidelines and adapt to local service needs on the basis of specialist clinical knowledge.
  • To take the lead on the development of specific team objectives or projects in liaison with peers and/or manager.


Person Specification

Education

Essential

  • oRegistration with Health Professions Council as a speech and language therapist.
  • oRecognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent.
  • oRegistered member of RCSLT.
  • oCourses and experience to a Specialist Dysphagia Practitioner level with babies and small children (as described in the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists Interprofessional dysphagia framework
  • oCompleted ADOS assessment training and is confident in administering the assessment, interpreting the findings and scoring the assessment. Has been completing ADOS Assessments for at least 2 years.


Desirable

  • oMembership of relevant Clinical Excellence Networks (CENs)


Experience

Essential

  • oWorking with clients who have a range of dysphagia, eating & drinking & communication needs. Clear, advanced clinical
  • oSpecialised knowledge of paediatric therapy and management of dysphagia, eating & drinking & complex communication needs difficulties.
  • oWorking collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals
  • oKnowledge and experience of assessment (including standardised) and treatment techniques in paediatrics.
  • oExperience of offering clinical supervision

  • oUnderstanding of safeguarding
