Job description

Job responsibilities

You will work as an integral member of the Team whilst having responsibility for a designated caseload. The post holder will be expected to positively represent the needs and rights of people with learning disabilities, tackling inequalities in health, and improving access to identified services in the statutory and 3rd sectors

You will be a very experienced OT who is able to utilize a full range of standardized (and bespoke) OT and other assessments in your clinical practice and have advanced skills in being able to devise complex formulations as a result.

The post holder will be expected to work with people with a range of presenting needs including complex care, autism, mental health and behaviours of concern. You will undertake specialist assessments and have a sound understanding of risk assessments and strategies. You will need excellent communication skills between disciplines and across organizations.

You will deliver high quality occupational therapy that is sensitive too and meets the needs of a diverse population group and be an active member of the multi-disciplinary team and wider MDT discussion/process as required. You will also work jointly with peers from other clinical disciplines in meeting the holistic needs of people.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Active HCPC registration
  • Postgraduate education in OT (or relevant field to practice) e.g. master's level OR equivalent
  • Ongoing and evidence of CPD in OT (in general terms) or wider healthcare
  • Formal management and/or clinical supervision training OR experience


Desirable

  • Additional training in specific OT, sensory integration, AMPS training
  • Relevant special interest group membership
  • Accredited Practice Placement Educator/mentor to students


Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 4 years of post-registration experience as an OT of which 2 years are in learning disabilities or mental health
  • Of the above, a minimum of 2 years working in the role of a band 6 OT in learning disabilities or mental health
  • Ability to work at master's level or equivalent in OT
  • Extensive experience of using a range of OT assessments and other tools and completing technical reports
  • Experience of communicating and liaising with people including internal and external agencies on complex matters, agencies on complex matters, issues and ideas and/or in complex situations
  • Experience working with staff teams, providing consultancy and support


Knowledge

Essential

  • Extensive knowledge of using a range of OT assessments and other tools and completing technical reports
  • A sound understanding of the Mental Capacity Act, LPS, DoLS Safeguarding and the associated legal frameworks
  • A comprehensive understanding and experience of multidisciplinary team (MDT) working (internal and external)
  • Good working knowledge of all areas of clinical governance including quality, audit and risk management
  • Knowledge of relevant Royal College of Occupational Therapy guidance for working with people with learning disabilities
  • Good level of knowledge of relevant legislation and national guidance as impacts on learning disabilities e.g. The NHS Long Term Plan, Valuing People, NIICE guidance, Equalities Act, Transforming Care agenda and wider drivers


Desirable

  • Knowledge and experience of dysphagia management and the supply of associated equipment required to promote safer eating and drinking practices


Skills & abilities

Essential

  • Understands the legal responsibilities of the OT profession
  • Able to work autonomously and on own initiative, prioritise and manage own time effectively and meet deadlines
  • Skills in the assessment of complex needs and presentations (across physical, mental health, autism and behaviours that may challenge as they relate to the specialism
  • Advanced skills in the designing of interventions and management plans, evaluation and monitoring
  • Ability to draft/write high level reports to a range of audiences (including writing plans and to devise easy read materials required)
  • Able to work at intense levels of concentration during most of the working day
  • Ability to work within a stressful and unpredictable environment
  • Able to carry out moderate to intense physical effort throughout the working day and carry out concurrent activities
