The Occupational Therapy service at Great Ormond Street Hospital have an opportunity available for an experienced paediatric occupational therapist to join our team. We are looking for someone to work within our acute Neurology and Neurosurgery team, providing assessment and intervention for children and young people with neurological conditions. You will have experience working with children with complex needs in an acute setting, a thorough understanding of child development, and the ability to communicate the potential impact of neurological conditions on occupational engagement throughout childhood and adolescence.

Main duties of the job

You will work with children and young people who are experiencing difficulties engaging in functional activities as a result of their neurological condition, associated physical difficulties or disability. They will support patients and their families through therapeutic intervention that ranges from specialist individual and multidisciplinary sessions, equipment provision, targeted education, and universal training. The team are looking for an individual who can promote a functional approach that both enables engagement in meaningful occupations and promotes participation within an acute setting.You will also have a role in the discharge planning process for children who require long-term support and intervention, working closely with both the MDT and external health and social care teams to enable successful transfers home to the right environment, with the right equipment and support. The ability to assess for and recommend / provide specialist equipment is therefore required.You will work as part of a small neurology team within thedepartment, supported by a Band 6 OT and a Band 8 OTwho leads the service. They will also benefit from working within an extremely supportive Occupational Therapy Team which comprises 35permanent staff. We have a flexible and robust supervision process and regular in service training opportunities that support professional development.   • Health and Care Professions Council registration

Desirable

  • Post graduate training in standardised paediatric specific occupational therapy assessment and evidence -based interventions


Experience/Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of paediatric neurology, particularly acquired brain injury
  • Significant experience as an OT working with children with neurological conditions and complex disability
  • Experience in supervising OTs and student OTs along with the excellent interpersonal and communication skills needed to support and teach junior staff.
  • Enhanced knowledge of child development and the impact of neurological conditions on this
  • Awareness of national initiatives and legislation pertaining to Health and Social Care and the relevance to Occupational Therapy provision within a tertiary setting
  • Significant knowledge and experience of using a range of outcome tools to demonstrate the effectiveness of Occupational Therapy provision/intervention


Desirable

  • Experience working with, assessing and handling newborn babies, including those who are premature
  • Active involvement in clinical support networks relevant to paediatric occupational therapy.

  • Enhanced clinical reasoning and analytical skills in the management of complex conditions in the speciality
  • Evidence of supervisory skills in an occupational therapy/healthcare setting
  • Able to work cooperatively and constructively within OT and multidisciplinary teams to facilitate good relationships across different professions.
  • Ability to clearly articulate and communicate the role of the OT within neurology and the value it offers children and their families for their well -being, safety and independence skills
  • Highly developed written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Highly developed organisation, computer, and time management skills
  • Ability to support the delivery of complex and sensitive information to a vulnerable patient group and their families.
  • Well developed knowledge of equipment used to enable participation of activities of daily living, including advanced clinical reasoning ability and knowledge of funding streams for provision through external partner organisations
  • Skills pertaining to research and service development, including conference/journal submissions and research projects
