The post is on the inter-trust and social services Band 5 OT rotation in the London boroughs of Camden, Haringey and Islington.

Rotations are 8 monthly in clinical areas.

This is an exciting opportunity for individuals to develop their clinical skills and knowledge in a variety of settings (see below) working with experienced clinicians and within supportive environments.

Rotations are available in the following areas:

Acute Physical - Whittington Health NHS Trust

Social Services - Islington Social Services

Intermediate Care - Whittington Health NHS Trust

Adult Mental Health - Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust

Complex Rehabilitation - Central and North West London NHS Trust

Paediatrics - Whittington Health NHS Trust

Community Learning Disabilities Service - Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust

*New staff to the rotation are normally placed in the acute setting for the first 2 rotations. All staff are expected to complete 2 acute physical rotations.

Some rotations require staff to have completed their preceptorship before they can be considered to rotate to them. Also there is a 7 day working requirement across acute services in place and this may extend to other services in the future.

Band 5 training is provided and the group meet regularly for peer support.

Main duties of the job

As a qualified Occupational Therapist, you will be responsible for assessing and treating patients, addressing quality of life, physical, cognitive, affective, social and environmental issues either on an individual or a group basis, utilising a range of therapeutic skills in accordance with devised treatment plans, in both hospital and in the community settings.

You will have an opportunity to hone your skills as an Occupational Therapist in a variety of settings, supporting lifelong learning and CPD opportunities will be available for you to access during your employment.

The post holder is a full member of the multidisciplinary team and the Therapy team and is responsible for a caseload of patients as delegated by the Senior or Team Leader of the clinical service. The post holder will set and maintain a high standard of clinical practice, which is evidence based where possible, using local and standardized assessments and outcome measures, where appropriate.

Job responsibilities

  • To assess and treat patients, addressing quality of life, physical, cognitive, affective, social and environmental issues either on an individual or a group basis, utilising a range of therapeutic skills in accordance with devised treatment plans, in both hospital and in the community settings.
  • To prioritise factors involved in the Clients presenting condition through clinical reasoning based on skills, knowledge, experience and on current professional opinion, Clients progress and other physical, social, emotional and mental health issues.
  • To use a client centred approach and to set treatment goals that focus on the strengths and the needs of the patient/client.
  • To ensure that the Client and/or their carer have an understanding of treatment protocols and to ensure that there is informed consent to examination and treatment as required by the Trust or Social Services.
  • In some service settings - To screen multidisciplinary referrals from a variety of sources where no other professionals are currently involved.
  • To devise and manage a treatment plan individual to a Clients presenting condition through, the use of functional rehabilitation, adaptation, equipment provision, education, health promotion and cognitive or psychological approaches.
  • To contribute, as part of the multi-disciplinary team to the discharge planning process, to enable clients to be discharged safely, with the relevant Occupational Therapy intervention completed in a timely manner.
  • Following discussion with a Senior, to use knowledge of other multidisciplinary roles and external agencies to ensure effective referral management and achieve best Client care.
  • To attend, and participate in multi disciplinary team meetings and case conferences and any relevant meetings as required.
  • To ensure Client and service records are recorded and maintained, as per local Occupational Therapy, HPC, BAOT and Trust guidelines.
  • To prescribe, delegate and monitor the work of Rehabilitation Assistants/ Therapy assistants and Technicians or Support Workers and countersign documentation if required.

    Qualifications

    Essential

    • Degree or Post-Graduate Qualification in Occupational Therapy
    • Professional Registration with HCPC


    Experience

    Essential

    • Experience of working in in-patient mental health environment
    • Experience working as part of MDT
    • Experience of using OT specific assessments


    Communication

    Essential

    • Excellent written communication skills
    • Evidence of ability to verbally communicate with a broad range of service users


    Knowledge and skills

    Essential

    • Evidence and awareness of OT process
    • Evidence of ability to facilitate OT groups
    • Awareness of mental health conditions and relevant legislation
