The post holder will be required to deliver a comprehensive Occupational Therapy Service for service users on two designated wards and to contribute as required to the Central Therapy Group Programme, to meet the identified occupational and functional needs of the service users. As a member of the multidisciplinary team the post holder will provide a variety of interventions, promoting a recovery approach and social inclusion. This will include assessment and treatment on the unit, in community settings and home visits as appropriate to support the acute clinical pathway.

The post-holder will ensure that her/his practice meets the requirements of this clinical group, and is in keeping with current evidence based practices. The post holder will work with OT's, Arts Therapists and technical staff to provide a comprehensive treatment programme for service users.

The post holder will have supervisory responsibility for junior staff and student practitioners working in the unit.

Although staff are allocated initially to work in one specific ward, all appointments are made to the In-Patient Services.

Job responsibilities

Clinical
  • To undertake occupational therapy assessments for a designated caseload, addressing occupational and skill deficits. This may include ADL, work, leisure, community skills and home visit assessments.
  • To actively involve patients in identifying their needs and goals, and provide a treatment plan that is appropriate to them as part of the multi-disciplinary care plan.
  • To plan and carry out individual and group interventions in appropriate settings using graded and meaningful activities to meet patients needs and achieve their goals.
  • To carry out group and individual interventions jointly with other members of the multi-disciplinary team as appropriate.
  • To provide information for patients and the multi-disciplinary team about local community resources and contribute to discharge and CPA planning.
  • To provide a goal directed outpatient service as part of the care programme approach plan, where appropriate and according to policy.
  • To monitor and evaluate treatment in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of the intervention.
  • To apply a broad level of understanding of disability and mental health problems, and recommend lifestyle changes or adaptations to patients social or physical environments.
  • To adhere to COT Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and local and national standards of practice.
  • To work flexible hours according to the needs of service delivery, as locally agreed.

  • Communication
  • To communicate effectively with service users, team members, carers, and other agencies, including taking an active role in developing links with community resources.
  • To participate in relevant clinical meetings regarding multi-disciplinary care planning.
  • To participate in occupational therapy meetings.
  • To maintain up to date clinical records and occupational therapy reports in case records in line with policies and professional standards.

  • Administration
  • To maintain up to date clinical and statistical records in accordance with Trust policy and professional standards.
  • To use petty cash responsibly and according to procedure.
  • To care for stock and equipment and alert administrator when stock needs replenishing or repairs are required.
  • To participate in departmental and ward administrative duties as required.

  • Supervision
  • To provide day to day support and regular supervision to ward activity workers

  • Management
  • To undertake management of projects as delegated by senior staff within own area of competence.

  • Training Staff and Students
  • To participate in the induction, training and education of staff and students of all disciplines in this setting.
  • To assist OT clinical lead in identifying staff training needs and in creating an environment of reflective practice.

  • Professional Development
  • To participate in the Preceptorship programme as required
  • To actively participate in own supervision and appraisal process using the KSF.
  • To utilise opportunities to develop skills and knowledge, apply critical appraisal and keep up to date with current practise in the field.
  • To support other Occupational Therapists in the education and training of other professionals and visitors to the department.
  • To participate in education programmes for Client/ service groups.
  • To support health promotion and health education initiatives within the locality and within the community directorate.
  • To comply with all mandatory training i.e. fire, violence awareness, CPR, manual handling and child protection.
  • To maintain and update a Continuing Professional Development portfolio.
  • To participate in the individual performance review system.
  • To participate in, and take responsibility for ongoing personal development through internal and external development opportunities, using the KSF.

  • Clinical Governance, Research and Practice Development
  • To participate in evaluation, audit and practice development activities within occupational therapy and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • To work with other staff on the implementation of national guidelines for practice.
  • To keep up to date by critically evaluating current research and applying it to practice where relevant.

    • HCPC registration
    • Diploma or degree in occupational therapy
