An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Substance Misuse Nurse to join the Offender Health Care Group working at HMP Ranby.

We have well-established and strong relationships with both the prison team and external partners who support us to deliver healthcare safely, effectively and efficiently.

Would you like to work closely with others as part of a wider MDT, which includes:

GPs, Psychiatrists, Specialist Community Practitioners, Pharmacists, Mental Health & Substance Misuse Practitioners, Learning disability services, Psychologists and a multitude other allied professionals.

Main duties of the job

To take a lead role in providing the successful and effective delivery of Substance Misuse services in HMP Services Offender Health. To work as a senior substance misuse practitioner within a multi-disciplinary team in a prison setting, providing care to patients with complex substance misuse problems, from the point of entry into the prison system to re-entry into the community so that re-offending is reduced, and the health and social functioning of prisoners is improved.

To provide high quality patient care through assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for people with substance misuse problems working to both harm reduction and health promotion / recovery agendas.

To provide leadership to junior staff

To provide effective substance misuse care services for prisoners, which deliver against required standards, e.g. Key Performance Indicators, Prison Health Performance Quality Indicators and demonstrate value for money, improve the mental health of individuals, enabling the service to compete as provider of choice to local commissioners.

Job responsibilities

The Offender Health Care Group is one of the largest and most successful providers of prison healthcare in the UK. The Care Group provide physical, mental health and substance misuse healthcare services in prisons across the East Midlands, Lincolnshire & Leicestershire.

The Care Group provides healthcare to 7 prisons and a short term holding facility. You are part of a large peer group of 400+ healthcare professionals with access to peer support, supervision and excellent opportunities for learning and development. We also offer services within the Personality Disorder Pathway, including Therapeutic Communities (within prisons), Community and Prison Personality Disorder services and specialist Veteran Services.

We are committed to working in partnership with prison services, national probation service other healthcare providers and our criminal justice system partners to improve health, support justice to reduce re-offending behaviour. The Offender Health Team truly believes it can make a difference to the lives of offenders by offering consistent, high-quality care in primary, mental health and substance misuse services that are equivalent to health services delivered outside of Prison.

To co-ordinate and lead the team in the provision of clinical and psychosocial interventions.

To provide guidance and support to junior members of the team regarding standards of care for patients.

To provide advice, guidance and leadership in respect of mental health and concurrent substance misuse needs.To provide clinical and managerial supervision to team members.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • First level registered nurse, RGN or RNMH
  • Significant demonstrable experience within the substance misuse field with evidence of appropriate continued learning
Desirable
  • Non Medical Prescribing Course (or willingness to attend)
Experience
Essential
  • Experience of working with and interviewing clients on a 1:1 basis and building good service user relations
  • Significant experience of planning and being in charge of a ward/unit
Desirable
  • Experience of working in criminal justice setting
Knowledge
Essential
  • Understanding of current substance misuse related issues
  • Understanding of equal opportunities issues within healthcare in criminal justice
Desirable
  • Awareness of local networks to support the delivery of SMS
