The opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified Parent-Infant Psychotherapist post within the Hillingdon Perinatal Mental Health Service.

This position is open to applicants who have post qualification experience, however, appropriately qualified candidates with demonstrable expertise and experience in perinatal mental health who have less post qualification experience, may also be considered.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for well-rounded and experienced parent-infant psychotherapist with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. They must be keen to work pro-actively and be confident and motivated as well as flexible and able to show initiative.They must be robust and resourceful and willing to work in an environment which can be demanding and challenging. Appropriate training, support and regular supervision will be provided by the Parent-Infant Psychotherapist and by the MDT, as well as group supervisions ' Holding the Baby in Mind'

We expect applicants to have experience of managing their own caseloads in a complex multidisciplinary/multiagency context. We also expect applicants to have experience of participating in formal child protection procedures and of being involved in interagency work with families. An awareness of current policies and practice in this area is essential.

Applicants will be expected to liaise with and train a range of health, social care and third sector staff so that confidence and the ability to provide training within the field is essential.

Experience of supervising and training others is also essential.

About us

CNWL specialist community perinatal mental health services integrate maternity services, community and primary care services. CNWL Perinatal Mental Health service is comprised of four community Perinatal services in the London Boroughs of Brent and Harrow, Hillingdon, Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea and Coombe Wood Mother and Baby inpatient Unit which is a tertiary service.

The Team provides a Monday-Friday, 9.00-5.00 service. The successful applicant would be expected to have the flexibility to work occasional extended opening hours to facilitate early or late clinic appointments, home visits or training.

The team works closely with Maternity Services on each site as well with local community and inpatient mental health services, primary care services, social services and a wide range of other statutory and third sector organisations.

Aligning to the Long Term Plan, our service is now offering a review at 12-months post natal for provisions of Extended Period of Care up until 24-months post-natal. Furthermore, we are also offering Partner's Screening for mental health needs in significant others and additional signposting.

The parent-infant psychotherapist will have a significant role in contributing to the specialist interventions for families offered extended period of care and providing psychotherapeutic treatment promoting the quality of the relationship between the mother and her infant.

The applicant must have excellent clinical skills, and experience with a wide variety of patient groups across the whole life span. In addition to the focus on maternal mental health, specialist perinatal mental health services also consider the family context and the infant and parent-infant relationship.

Applicants must have a proven ability to formulate, document, implement and review plans for the psychotherapeutic treatment and management of women with a full range of clinical presenting problems. They should demonstrate and ability to thoroughly assess risk, to formulate safe and effective risk management plans and document and communicate these clearly and effectively.

Person Specification Essential/Desirable Essential
  • Post graduate or doctoral level training in Parent infant psychotherapy or child or adult psychology with parent infant component
  • Adult or Child Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy - Developmental Psychology
  • Masters level preclinical training at an Association of psychotherapists recognised training school, Educated at doctoral level or equivalent.
Desirable
  • Training in one or more specialised areas of psychological practice e.g. Family work, CBT
  • MSc in Psychoanalytic Developmental Psychology or other relevant Psychotherapeutic/Development Degree - Parent-Infant Psychotherapy training
Experience Essential
  • Substantial experience of working as a psychotherapist in relevant setting
  • Considerable experience of assessment and formulation of diagnosis within the area of perinatal mental health
  • Extensive experience in working with patients with known mental health risks and complexity
Desirable
  • Experience of supervising other mental health staff
  • Experience of psychodynamically informed clinical work
  • Experience of working in adult mental health
Skills and knowledge Essential
  • Extensive experience of specialist psychotherapeutic assessment and treatment of pregnant and postpartum women as a full member of a multidisciplinary team located in a hospital outpatient setting.
  • Experience working with mothers and families with severe mental illness and risk to self.
  • Advanced specialist Knowledge of new-borns, early infancy and child development and of theories of infant and child mental health
Desirable
  • Experience of the application of psychological interventions in different cultural contexts.
