12 months Fixed-Term, Full-Time

We are seeking a Specialty Doctor who has experience working in psychiatry who is either considering non-training posts or who is looking to increase their experience in psychiatry.

The person should be a good communicator and works well in a team. They should have some experience and knowledge of physical health conditions.

They should be keen to involve themselves in improving the delivery of care on a busy high intensity ward.

Main duties of the job

This is a fulltime post on a busy PICU ward. The post holder will be expected to undertake the day to day clinical tasks discussed in whiteboard meetings but will also be able to work fairly independently and will be supervised clinically by the Specialist Grade doctor.

The post holder will have the necessary skills to prepare medico-legal reports including those for Tribunals and Managers hearings and will be expected to attend these hearings.

Job responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

1. Detailed clerking, history taking and initiation of all necessary investigations and assessments for patients.

2. Establishing, initiating and evaluating treatment plans and risk assessments in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team and under the supervision of the Specialist Grade doctor.

3. Interviewing relatives and informal carers of patients as required.

4. Undertaking the relevant referrals to other disciplines and services both within the multi-disciplinary team as well as to services and resources external to the service

5. Observation of Trust, BMHS and local policies and procedures including those related to medicines management and physical healthcare.

6.Preparation and presentation of medico-legal reports, including those for Managers hearings and Medial Health Review Tribunals for in-patients.

7. The post holder will complete full risk assessments of all in-patients in conjunction with the MDT.

8. The post-holder will liaise with all external agencies as required.

9. The post holder is expected to be part of the 2nd on-call rota (1 in 10) with attendance to the wards at weekends.

continuing professional development

1. The Trust expects Speciality Doctors to participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Specialty Doctors are entitled to a maximum of 30 days paid study leave within any three-year period, and although there is no specific budget for CPD, each request for training will be considered in line with both the needs of the post-holder and the service and will be supported by local budgets where appropriate

2. The Trust also has an appraisal process in place, and the post holder will be required to undertake an annual appraisal and maintain a Personal Development Plan.

3. If not already a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists doctors are encouraged to become an Affiliate of the College.

STUDY AND TRAINING

1. This is not an approved training post. It is therefore suitable for those doctors who do not have to be in an approved training post or who wish to gain further experience prior to undertaking further specialist training.

2. Formal in-service training on site includes an academic afternoon, case discussions and a journal club.

3. The post holder will be expected to teach as part of the internal trainees teaching programme and to medical students from Imperial College.

4. It is mandatory for the post holder to complete some training i.e. Fire and Safety (annually), Clinical Risk Management (3 yearly) and Control & Restraint (annual refreshers).

Education and Qualifications Training

Essential

  • Primary Medical Degree
  • Full GMC registration
  • GMC Licence to Practice


Desirable

  • MRCP, MRCPCH or equivalent
  • An additional post graduate qualification of relevance to (own specialty)
  • Section 12 approved


Experience

Essential

  • Experience in the field of general adult psychiatry


Desirable

  • Experience of service development/business planning
