An exciting opportunity for a Senior Clinical or Counselling Psychologist, Psychotherapist or Cognitive Behavioural Therapist has arisen within our community Perinatal Mental Health Team as part of the expanding psychological therapies offer in our service. This role is to provide psychological assessment and therapeutic interventions to women, infants and their families during the perinatal period from pregnancy to the infant's 2nd birthday, as well as to support psychological thinking in the team through consultation, supervision and joint working.

Main duties of the job

Applicants should have a genuine interest in the field of perinatal mental health, significant post-qualification experience in delivering evidence-based psychological interventions, excellent clinical skills and an ability to provide supervision and consultation to multidisciplinary colleagues, junior staff and trainees. The direct clinical work will focus on providing assessment, formulation and therapeutic interventions to women and their families during pregnancy and the two years following the baby's birth.

It would be desirable for applicants to have previous experience of working in the field of perinatal mental health and knowledge of perinatal mental health conditions, interventions and safeguarding issues. The ability to work closely with professionals in maternity services, health visiting and children's services is important. The service has strong links to the local clinical psychology training programme, providing training placements and facilitating doctoral research. Skills in research and service evaluation would be valuable.

Job description Job responsibilities

This role involves providing direct psychological interventions to women, infants and their families during the perinatal period as well as supporting the extended perinatal mental health team and associated services through supervision and consultation.

This involves advising on the management of complex presentations of mental health difficulties in the perinatal period, including the development of psychologically-informed formulations pertaining to the understanding of the psychological and psychosocial changes associated with pregnancy and the postpartum period and their impact on maternal and infant mental health, along with a basic assessment of parenting skills within the context of evaluation of the mother-infant relationship and infant development.

The role involves co-working cases with the extended perinatal mental health team and providing input to various forums within the perinatal service (such as joint obstetric and psychiatry clinics, CPA, multi-agency meetings and child protection meetings).

The role involves providing clinical supervision for junior colleagues and peers across the perinatal services within professional guidelines and within the overall framework of the perinatal services policies and procedures. Utilising research skills for audit, policy and service evaluation projects is also an element of this role.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Doctoral level training in Clinical or Counselling Psychology (or equivalent prior to 1996) and HCPC registration; Or Postgraduate Diploma qualification in Cognitive and/or Behavioural Psychotherapy and Accreditation with BABCP as a CBT therapist with either a prior core profession or via KSA route. Or Masters or above in a psychotherapy with accredited as a psychotherapist with UKCP or BPC (British Psychoanalytic Council)
  • Additional significant post qualification training relevant to the service and job role outlined in the job summary.
  • Formal training in supervision of others.
Experience Essential
  • Significant post qualification experience in an area of practice relevant to the service specified in the job summary, to include assessment of risk.
