We are recruiting for a Faster Diagnosis Clinical Nurse Specialist who shares our ambition and vision to deliver the Best of Care by the Best People and has the drive to take us forward, by ensuring that the Trust continues to be the first choice for patients and our staff.

Main duties of the job

In conjunction with Cancer Services, the breast multidisciplinary team, diagnostics and tertiary services the post holder will assist with the clinical aspects of the co-ordination of the one stop diagnostic pathway for breast cancer, incorporating information provision, physical and psychological support.

The Trust already provides straight-to-test pathways for cancer, including clinical triage processes, and this role will be key to developing and maintaining these pathways for breast cancer. The post holder will need to act autonomously but in close collaboration with Cancer Services, the Faster Diagnosis nursing team, a team of consultant surgeons, imaging, the Breast Unit, other tertiary trusts when applying specialist expertise to all facets of care for patients with suspected breast cancer.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will provide specialist advice and support for patients with suspected breast cancer during the journey from referral to diagnosis. The role will be part of a growing team of nurses who will focus on the diagnostic part of the cancer pathway, focusing on streamlining timed diagnostic pathways and meeting the new 28-day Faster Diagnosis Standard for cancer.

We are looking for an experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our team, to offer an individualised service and provide direct support and advice to patients with suspected breast cancer during various and often complex diagnostic tests with a focus on meeting the 28 day Faster Diagnosis Standard and other Cancer Waiting Times targets.

To maintain nurse led clinic's whereby the concerns and needs of the patient's and their family/friends and carers are appropriately channelled.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSc Nursing
  • Post registration qualification in appropriate area of speciality or equivalent post qualification experience


Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of breast cancer pathways, diagnostics and cancer waiting time standards
  • Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues


Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience of working autonomously at an advanced level within the specialist area delivering effective patient focused care
  • Proven evidence of management / leadership skills and autonomous practice
  • Experience of delivering change management both personally and as a facilitator
  • Previous experience of student supervision and clinical education at undergraduate level


Skills

Essential

  • Proven listening / counselling skills with the ability to manage complex situations and appropriately deliver sensitive and difficult outcomes
  • Evidence of teaching skills in particular teaching patients in how to manage their conditions and raise their awareness of their condition
  • Advanced clinical, managerial and leadership skills in specialty
  • Able to use skills of history taking and physical assessment to direct patient care
