Job responsibilities
Teaching and training responsibilities (including staff development)
Specific responsibility for the teaching and training of healthcare scientists on a range of training programmes including apprenticeship schemes and practitioner training programmes.
Clinical supervision of respiratory physiology staff that are less skilled, for their development in both routine and specialised techniques.
Continual assessment and development of trainees undertaking a range of ARTP professional qualifications.
Development of assessment and supervisory skills as part of a personal development plan.
Attend and participate in departmental meetings, with regard to staff training as appropriate.
Professional and Self Development responsibilities
Develop skills and knowledge as part of a departmental training programme, following Trust Personal Development and Review.
Attend appropriate scientific and educational meetings and courses for personal skill and knowledge development and updating.
Acquisition of specialist knowledge using all available resources
Participate in Continued Professional Development.
Research and Development responsibilities
Responsible for identifying and undertaking audit of areas of service as appropriate.
Regularly participates in departmental research and audit projects.
Present research/projects at meetings and as scientific reports as appropriate.

- To work as a competent independent practitioner across the range of routine and specialised investigations within the Respiratory and Sleep Sciences Department and a variety of clinical settings.
- Perform a range of invasive and non-invasive lung function and sleep investigations including analysis and clinical interpretation of results.
- Discuss findings of investigations with patients, explaining and initiating treatment pathways as and when required.
- Contribute to the effective day to day running of the department's respiratory investigations.
- Effectively manage your own patient workload.
- Specific responsibility for the training and development of undergraduate and graduate staff.
- Participate in the department's research, development and audit activities.
- This role will cover both our University and St Cross hospital sites.

Main duties of the job
- Participate in the standard setting for all routine test procedures and equipment including participation in the development of standard operating procedures.
- Contribute to the maintenance of safe working practices within the department of respiratory and sleep sciences complying with all Health and Safety legislation, other relevant legislation and Trust policies.
- Contribute to the day to day running of the department, including appointment provision and stock control.
- Plan and prioritise own work load.
- Perform the full range of routine procedures, without supervision, on patients of all ages in a variety of locations to obtain high quality diagnostic information. This includes: full lung function testing, capillary blood gas measurements, reversibility studies, field exercise testing, challenge testing, muscle function and diagnostic sleep studies.
- Perform a range of complex, specialised procedures in which a high degree of personal expertise has been developed. This may include: oxygen assessments, hypoxic challenge testing, arterial blood gas measurement, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, non-invasive ventilation and CPAP therapy.
