Trainee CBT Therapist - 24 Month Contract:

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Physical Health Psychology Service (PHRP) as a Trainee Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. This training post will be managed initially over a fixed term post, which is 24 months in duration from date of appointment. Candidates will commence with service at a salary in line with Agenda for Change Band 5, where they will remain through training (Jan 2023-Jan 2024). A promotion to Band 6 will be offered on evidence of successful qualification, and will remain in place during the following accreditation and professional development period (at least 12 months post-qualification) with the opportunity to progress to substantive Band 7 roles having completed the full, locally agreed preceptorship programme, funding permitted. This includes consolidating existing skills, as well access to additional, enhanced clinical skills training, delivered by nationally leading experts including ACT, EMDR and Cognitive Assessment skills.

The successful candidate will have and existing qualification as a Low Intensity CBT Therapist (PWP, adult), or will have sufficient undergraduate qualification (or equivalent) and experience in line with the requirements of the Knowledge, Skills and Attributes (KSA) framework.

The contract comprises 2 days academic study leave (in term time) and 3 days in clinical practice. Expert supervision and mentorship will be provided.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will receive high quality training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (PgDip CBT) at University of Cumbria. The training lasts for one year, starting in January. Trainees will typically attend University on two days per week and be in service for the remaining three days.

The post holder will be an experienced individual who will be taking on an additional training role. The post holder will work within the Physical Health Psychology Service providing high intensity interventions whilst undertaking a programme of training for this role. This intensive training post will equip the post holder to provide a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) service to patients with problems such as depression and anxiety disorders for which CBT is demonstrated to be clinically effective.

Trainees will be offered regular clinical and case management supervision to support Trainee High Intensity Therapists to achieve the best results possible for their clients.

On successful completion of the course, individuals will have received the training required to fulfil BABCP's Minimum Training Standards and will be able to apply for provisional, and then full accreditation as a BABCP registered CBT therapist.

Job description Job responsibilities

The post holder will work across the Physical Health Psychology Service (PHPs) which includes nearly 100 posts.

Within the team there are a range of Psychologists, Psychological Practitioners, CBT Therapists, Physiotherapists, and Occupational therapist, Living Well Coaches, Wellbeing Activators and Administrative Staff.

The department provides psychological care to patients with physical health problems; this includes:
  • Long Term Conditions, including COPD, Diabetes and Cardiac problems, Cancer, Neuropsychology and Palliative care.
  • Persistent Physical Symptoms (persistent pain, Chronic Fatigue, Medically Unexplained Symptoms), including supporting patients with frequent attendance across the Health and Care System (High Intensity Users HIU)

The Service also hosts the Wellbeing Service (supporting people within primary care setting with multiple Long Term Conditions or a change in life circumstances).

We also have Paediatric Diabetes posts and are striving to develop a paediatric Physical Health Psychology Service.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent in a discipline connected to Mental Health (e.g. Psychology, or Neuroscience) Those without an undergraduate qualification but with evidence of the ability to study at third year of undergraduate degree level will also be considered.
  • OR Qualified in a mental health profession (e.g. social work, OT, CPN, clinical or counselling psychologist, psychiatrist) and have at post qualification experience
  • OR Candidates who do not have a BABCP recognised core professional training can apply if they meet the BABCP Knowledge Skills and Attitude criteria. They will need to bring a KSA portfolio to the interview
  • Evidence of meeting the Knowledge Skills and Attitude (KSA) requirements of BABCP (candidates are required to produce a full and complete KSA portfolio for assessment at interview)
  • Candidates who are qualified as Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs) must have two years post-qualification experience working as a PWP (taken from the date of their exam board).
