Reporting to the Development Nurse for Student Experience the post holder will work across the nursing clinical areas at SWLSTG, in partnership with Higher Education Institutions to:
  • Provide support for student nurses whilst they are on placement with the trust.
  • Support Practice Assessors and supervisors of student nurses, and maintain clinical placement quality, ensuring placement audits are up to date and registered with all HEIs.
  • Assist in the Implementation of strategies to meet the standards set by the NMC, Health Education England and Local Education Boards. This includes Practice Assessor update training, working with link lecturers and supporting student nurses.
  • Maintain digital systems for disseminating information to all, practice assessors and clinical managers.
  • Offer guidance to managers on NMC standards in nurses' education, maximising the use of mentors, link lecturers, development programmes and the provision of practice opportunities across the Trust

The post holder will be an enthusiastic and hardworking individual who is a good team player with and the ability to resolve conflict, motivate junior staff, Practice Assessors and student nurses as well as acting as a positive role model.

The role will involve liaising with relevant clinical areas to arrange and support clinical placements for students. The post holder will ensure that his/her own practice remains up-to-date and in line with best practice within the field of Mental Health.

Main duties of the job

  • Supporting Practice Assessors and supervisors of student nurses, student nurses and maintaining clinical placement quality, and ensuring placement audits are up to date and registered with all HEIs.

  • To maintain the quality of the practice learning environment. Where required ensure quality improvement action plans are introduced and monitored to support clinical areas in reaching the required standard as an individual centre of excellence.
  • To attend and actively participate in student induction, workshops and practice development meetings with faculty colleagues and Trust wide partnerships & external stakeholders.
  • To facilitate supervision in peer and group support settings, as well as with individual student nurses if appropriate.
  • To develop a close working relationship with teaching staff to ensure a coherent delivery of NMC placement processes, and to offer Practice Assessor and student nurse support.

Our Trust headquarters is located within the impressive grounds of Springfield University Hospital in Tooting and we also operate in nearly 100 other locations throughout the UK. This is easily accessible via the Northern Line (Tooting Bec Station) and via private transport. The Trust provides subsidised parking fares for all our substantive staff. Clinical/Professional

  • To maintain records in accordance with the NMC standards for record keeping and adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct. (placement audits, database of all Practice Assessor qualifications and related databases).
  • To develop a close working relationship with teaching staff to ensure a coherent delivery of NMC placement processes, and to offer Practice Assessor and student nurse support.
Management
  • To assist the Development Nurse in co-ordinating practice development initiatives.
  • To assist in the management of student nurses and take appropriate actions in accordance with the Trusts Human Resources Policies & Procedures.
  • To ensure clear lines of communication with the mentors, students, matrons and seniors nurses in the absence of the Development Nurse.
  • To support the team with ensuring completion of all data quality tasks.
  • To implement and contribute to policy and service development as appropriate.
  • To participate in the induction, supervision, and development of student nurses and to conduct formal and informal supervision of students.
  • To take a lead role in the promotion and monitoring of student nurse morale.
  • To demonstrate a commitment to service development by taking an active part in the continuing provision of the service.
  • To act responsibly with regard to student and staff well-being, counsel and advise and refer when necessary if appropriate or to seek advice from the development nurse if needed.
  • Maintain communication systems to enhance placement management processes within the Trust and respond to any difficulties related to this.
  • Manage placement enquiries and complaints from clinical staff, students, and the HEI, in partnership with the HEI(s).
Professional
  • To maintain and improve own professional, clinical, managerial, knowledge and skills by promoting self-growth and development through in-service training programmes and other educational programme/materials as agreed by Head of Nursing.
  • To participate in nursing research and disseminate the knowledge and results from such research to colleagues.
  • To be fully conversant with legislation relevant to NMC requirements and student nurse practice.
  • To initiate/participate in developments and innovations within the Nurse Education Development Team.
  • Support senior nurse in identifying current and future practice development/learning needs for pre and post registered nursing workforce.
  • Monitor attendance to Practice Assessor updates.
  • Identify, and address, issues relating to student education in placement settings, maintaining an impartial view balancing the needs of the student and the mentor.
  • Facilitate and enable mentors and students to identify learning opportunities in practice.
Training, Development and Education
  • Maintain knowledge of developments in Nurse Education and Training.
  • Support the implementation of NMC standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice.
  • Work in partnership with link tutors to undertake education audits and as necessary prepare placements for education audits.
  • Liaise with the HEI regarding curriculum changes and ensure that these changes are reported back to the Trust.
  • Assist Practice Assessors to interpret, utilise and complete student practice assessment
  • To work in partnership with the HEIs and Trust to manage the quality of placements available for pre-registration nursing students.
  • To actively promote and contribute to on-going educational programmes and reinforce a positive learning environment within teams.
  • To promote research and innovation within nursing practice, ensuring that teams are kept abreast of developments.
  • To undertake mandatory and statutory training as required by Trust policy, identifying individual and team training needs.
  • To assist in provision of induction training to student nurses and all newly qualified nursing staff.
  • To participate in the training and supervision of Student Nurses, if applicable, and act as a Practice Assessor.
  • To assist with student nurse support supervision programmes and ensure all staff are updated as on their occurrence.
