Under the overall direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager, maintain high standards of patient care and ward performance. Be professionally responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of a multidisciplinary programme of care. Support the Clinical Nurse Manager and the multidisciplinary team in the leadership of the nursing team, patient care and ward. Manage the ward in the absence of the Clinical Nurse Manager.

Job description Job responsibilities

  • Demonstrate the skills to professionally communicate complex information to users and carers in an empathic and supportive way.
  • Provide clinical and professional advice, leadership and support to a multidisciplinary staff group, patients and their families.
  • Attend formal meetings i.e. safeguarding, governance on behalf of the Clinical Nurse Manager when required.
  • Understands and appreciate need to adapt when there are barriers to Communication.
  • Take account of cultural issues in communication with everyone, including work colleagues.
  • Understand what translation and advocacy services are available and follow correct procedures.
  • Ensures records of self and junior colleagues are up to date, accurate and consistent with Trust policy.
  • Establish and maintain accurate, complete and up to date care plans in Line with Trust policies and procedures.
  • Effectively use Trust electronic tools and IT systems.
  • Competent to implement strategies which facilitate adherence to treatment.


Person Specification Essential Essential
  • RMN/RGN/RNLD (Dip HE or degree)
  • Active mentor qualification
  • Post registration experience of working as a nurse within secure mental health services is essential
  • Up to date knowledge of Mental Health Acts
  • Management of staff
