An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Band 7 Team Leader to join the Lewisham Mental Health Liaison Team within our busy, multi-disciplinary Liaison Service based at Lewisham Hospital.

The Mental Health Liaison Team provides a 24 hr/ 7 days a week service to Lewisham Hospital offering urgent assessments to adult patients attending the Emergency Department and those admitted to the inpatient wards; working closely with Lewisham Hospital teams.

Main duties of the job

The Team Leader will be responsible for the day to day clinical leadership, management and performance of the Mental Health Liaison Team in the Emergency Department; and will be responsible for the effective supervision of the nursing team, supported by the Service Manager

You must have excellent clinical skills, be able to demonstrate an ability to complete complex, comprehensive mental state examinations. Ability to thoroughly assess risk, formulate safe and effective risk management plans and support making complex discharge and pathway decisions.

You will be expected to offer senior clinical advice and support to colleagues both within the liaison service and Emergency Department. You should have senior experience of management of mental health emergencies, and crisis care in a variety of settings. A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the important interface between physical and mental health is essential.

You must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You must also be motivated, flexible and be able to show initiative in an environment which can be fast paced and pressured. All applicants must also hold the relevant mentorship qualification.

You will join the team as we continue to develop our service in line with NHS England standards according to the CORE 24 Model for Mental Health Liaison Services. Clinical supervision can be provided along with excellent training opportunities.

The post is based at Lewisham Hospital.

Our Trust headquarters is located at Denmark Hill less than 5 minutes from the train station (zone 2). We also provide services and operate across other locations, such as London boroughs of Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark; and substance misuse services for residents of Bexley, Lambeth, Greenwich and Wandsworth.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • oRegistered Mental Health Nurse
  • oEvidence of continued professional development
  • oAt least 5 years post qualifying work in mental health services with a sound knowledge of the full range of mental health services, both inpatient and community based.
  • oAt least 2 years at working at band 6 level or above.
  • Mentorship qualification

  • Masters qualifications
Skills and Experience Essential
  • oMust be able to have an overview of the provision of mental health services and ensure service users'needs are met appropriately. This will mean a pro-active approach to bed management and promoting flexibility throughout the various parts of the service.
  • oWorking knowledge of relevant legislation associated with acute mental health care, including MHA 2007, CPA procedures, Human Rights Act
  • oA sound understanding of how to assess and meet the needs of adults with acute mental illness
  • oExperience in the management of psychiatric crises and emergencies
  • oExperience of managing and leading a team through change
  • oPrevious experience working within Mental Health Liaison Services
Knowledge Essential
  • oExperience of service development, Quality Improvement and leading change
  • oDemonstrate skills in autonomous, senior decision making
  • Understanding the demands of patient flow within the borough and service
Desirable
  • oEvidence of other advanced education related to Psychiatric Liaison development
