We have an exciting opportunity to recruit to a developmental role of acute oncology clinical nurse specialist. The successful candidate will start as a band 6 and then once they achieve agreed competencies as, they will rise to band 7. Support and training will be given to the successful candidate to help them achieve the necessary knowledge and skills for this.

The acute oncology CNS will work with existing members of the team to deliver a high standard acute oncology service at DCH. The service provides acute care and support for those people affected by cancer. The post holder will also play an active role in the education and support of other clinical teams around the trust and in primary care who are involved in caring for patients with cancer and associated problems.

This post would be best suited to an experienced band 5 or 6 nurse who has at least 2 years experience in an acute setting caring for patients affected by cancer. The post-holder will be part of a team but once competent, will be expected to work on their own at times, using their own clinical judgement on a daily basis. The successful candidate will be supported to use their extended nursing skills on a regular basis assuming they have the necessary education, skills and competence and in line with NMC and trust policy.

There will be opportunity to access degree and/or masters level education and acute oncology training for candidates who do not currently have this level of education.

Main duties of the job

Includes:

Telephone assessment and triage using the UKONS triage tool kit.

Follow-up of calls made to the acute oncology triage phone.

Post emergency attendance but not admission follow up as assessed appropriate as per National Guidance.

Face to face assessment of patients presenting to DCH as an emergency with problems relating to their cancer or treatment.

Care planning, treatment and evaluation of care for patients with cancer who present with acute problems.

Delivery of education and support to non-specialist cancer staff in the acute trust and in out of hospital care settings.

Audit and service development.

Person Specification

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential

  • NMC registered Nurse
  • Education to degree level in health related subject
  • Post registration specialist qualification e.g.- oncology/haematology or acute oncology
  • Chemotherapy administration qualification
  • Evidence of continued professional development


Desirable

  • Relevant teaching qualification
  • Masters level education in health related subject or willingness to undertake this level of study.
  • Physical examination skills and qualifications or willingness to undertake
  • Recognised advanced communication skills qualification or willingness to undertake
  • Able to undertake appropriate imaging requests post patient review and maintain IRMER training or willingness to undertake.


KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Significant post registration nursing experience in acute hospital nursing
  • Significant recent experience of working within the field of acute oncology/haemato-oncology
  • Significant recent experience working in an acute medical environment - ED or acute medicine
  • Significant recent experience of administration of chemotherapy and care of chemotherapy patients
  • Significant experience of care of central venous catheters
  • Considerable experience working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Considerable experience in a nursing role of managing complex patients
  • Experience of clinical audit and/or utilisation of research skills
  • Experience in developing and/or reviewing standards/policies
  • Education/teaching experience in practice
