A rare and exciting opportunity has come about in the Community Rehabilitation Team in Brighton & Hove for a Senior Occupational Therapist to join the team, on a 12 month fixed term basis.

The Community Rehabilitation Team provides a specialist and intensive rehabilitation service to support the recovery of adults with psychosis and other mental health conditions.

The team is made up of a Team Leader, Team Secretary, Community Mental Health Nurses, Occupational Therapists, a Psychologist, Senior Recovery Workers and Support, Time and Recovery workers and Consultant Psychiatrist.

Main duties of the job

The service delivers personalised programmes of rehabilitation, focussed on addressing and minimising the symptoms and functional impairment that people may have, whilst empowering and re-enabling them to lead as independent and meaningful lives as possible. Delivering expert multidisciplinary comprehensive assessments of an individual's physical, psychological and social needs and risk factors and develop personalised rehabilitation treatment plans.

The service ensures effective care planning, clinical and risk management arrangements and adopts a positive approach to risk-taking for service users as a way of embedding recovery values into everyday practice. The service endeavors to ensure service users are involved in day to day decisions about their care.

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, creative, flexible and resourceful Occupational Therapist. The ideal candidate will have experience of working with individuals with complex needs, including severe & enduring mental health needs, substance misuse, forensic issues and housing difficulties. A passion for working with people to support individual recovery goals and to work collaboratively with patients, carers, and a range of services across the statutory, independent and voluntary sectors to deliver rehabilitation care is essential.

The team have a key role in the management of the wider mental health rehabilitation pathway in Brighton & Hove around improving patient flow through the rehabilitation pathway to ensure care is provided in the most appropriate and as independent setting possible, and that there is continuity of rehabilitation care and smooth transitions between providers and different settings across the pathway.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Degree/Diploma in occupational therapy
  • Evidence of post graduate level study/training
  • Registration with the HPC as an occupational therapist
  • Practice Education training
  • Training in the use of standardised occupational therapy assessment tools
Knowledge & Experience Essential
  • Experience as a qualified occupational therapist in mental health
  • Broad experience of working with clients with a range of mental health problems
  • Experience of both group and individual work
  • Experience of multidisciplinary working
  • Experience of supervising staff and students
  • Experience as a Care Coordinator
  • Experience in a clinical area related to the post
  • Leadership experience
  • Experience in applying a range of assessment tools and a comprehensive knowledge of occupational therapy clinical approaches used in mental health
