The post offered is a split job with 3 PAs working in Camden Older Adults CMHT and 7 PAs working in Camden Memory Service. The postholder will share consultant lead responsibilities with a part-time consultant (0.6 WTE) in the CMHT. The lead for the memory service is a 0.6 WTE consultant.

The post is based at the Peckwater Centre in Kentish Town alongside our other Camden Old Age services.

This is a replacement post due to retirement. The post is available from October 2022

The role of the Consultant is to be the clinical lead of the team and to ensure high quality, patient-centered, effective, safe and efficient care is delivered by the team.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will provide clinical leadership to Camden memory service and the CMHT.

Camden memory service received approximately 700 referrals annually in the year prior to the pandemic. The service has a current caseload of 1200 patients who are reviewed regularly by the memory service non-medical practitioners. Consultant responsibility for these patients is shared equally between the consultants working into the services.

The post-holder would undertake a maximum of 12 new patient assessments per month. Not all referrals however will require a medical assessment. Appointments are all arranged by the administrators after the triage meeting with the consultants.

Job description Job responsibilities

The CMHT is a multidisciplinary team that provides assessment and treatment to Camden residents with mental health needs. Eligibility criteria for the service are not age based but based on need. Patients will be accepted if they fit any of the following criteria:
  • People of any age with a primary dementia.
  • People with mental disorder and physical illness or frailty which contribute(s) to, or complicate(s) the management of their mental illness. This may include people under 65
  • People with psychological or social difficulties related to the ageing process, or end of life issues, or who feel their needs may be best met by a service for older people. This would normally include people over the age of 70.

  • The service receives approximately 200 referrals annually and has a current caseload of 144 patients. Most new assessments are carried out by the medical staff. Consultant responsibility for these patients will be shared between the consultants. Where possible the consultants will be linked to GP practices to develop closer working relationships.

    Person Specification Education/Qualifications/Registration Essential
    • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 6 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training Psychiatry
    • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry
    • Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician
    • Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing
    Desirable
    • Other relevant post-graduate qualification
    • Training up to date to be an approved trainer/clinical supervisor in line with GMC recognition and approval of trainers which is overseen by the LETB
    • Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training & Consultant mentor
    Knowledge & Experience Essential
    • Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice.
    • Clinical knowledge of the full range mental disorders presenting in the later life period.
    • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and safeguarding practices
    • Experience in work place based assessments of doctors in training
    • Expertise in assessing, diagnosing and managing all types of dementia
    • Good understanding of Trust governance structures, especially clinical governance
    • Experience of service development.
    Desirable
    • Experience in teaching small and large groups
    • Experience in developing policies and protocols.
    Skills & Abilities Essential
    • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change.
    • Good knowledge of and ability to use both spoken and written English
    • Ability to practise as an independent Consultant Psychiatrist.
    • Teaching and supervision skills for undergraduate medical students, doctors in training and multi-professional staff
    • Experience in undertaking clinical audit, investigating serious incidents and handling complaints
    Desirable
    • Experience in successfully delivering research projects
